Well, I guess another solution is not to use ropes. The reason I said "once" is because I literally have climbed a rope once. I played before ropes came into the game, so I was used to using wood platforms or dirt and stone blocks to get around, then I would get a grappling hook or ivy whip, then I would get rocket boots and then wings. I really have not climbed a rope other than to see how it was used in the game...once.
Also eventually you won't even be using rope, chain, etc...you'll just be flying up.
