Can Trees Grow Underground

Hello, I am Dr. Luffenberg of the Scientific Research Department at Keep Vonheer *ROLEPLAY* and have a dying question that MUST be answered. I have been experimenting for several days in my underground laboratory if and when a tree can grow healthily underground. I have given them torch light, but nothing has come of it in 5 days (Terraria ones). Since I am not able to figure this out, can you answer it for me? Thank you for your assistance of the Kingdom of Vleshers.

Directl underground with Dirt Walls and Dirt Floor.

Trees can not grow in front of any type of wall.

However I'm not sure what the depth limit is otherwise, I assume it has to be above Underground level.

So if its only the dirt background (no rocks in it), and I rip it out, then I can my king can order his worker to make a working underground tree farm?

Again, I don't know the specifics. Just tear down any backwalls, make sure the ceiling is plenty high, and give it a shot.

Why thank you Prof. Batabii! I'll be experimenting further so that we can hopefully save space for the keep, village, and the other plethora of buildings!
