1.2 House Defense
So im in hardmode and just survived my first enounter with the solar eclipse, I want to make my house more defendable from bloodmoons and so on (such as lava pits, barriers, blockades and so on) anyone got tips on this sorta thing? I'm not exactly the best at making houses since it looks like one massive apartment complex.

Dig 2 big holes around your house and then just use your ranged weapon and kill them

As others already suggested, lava pit.

Beside that, get some traps, place them around outside the house, spread out some pressure plates there where you think the mobs are likely to step on, observe the ground AI and predict their movement, you can also shape the enviorment to achieve that yourself. And also find a way for yourself to move around those traps (or use certain types of pressure plates to your advantage).

If you have access to the jungle temple, take the traps from there, especially those that fire downward. Hardmode always means for me to build my house in the air, so those traps are very useful for my home, the lowest room in my base is such a room for these kind of events. Place some traps as floor (+ flame trap left and right, good for dealing with parrots and vampires), but also leave some floor tiles free where you put wooden platforms, which serve as spots from where you can shoot down yourself.

Once solar eclipse or blood moon occur, get in that room (i assume your NPCs are all living upstairs), switch on, and also do some shooting yourself, pretty good/safe money maker.

My houses usually have little to no defenses. I build it slightly above a flattened out ground, with flat ground that goes off my screen to either side of it. Directly in the center at the bottom is my exit that usually ends in a series of two to three platforms. Recently on my main world I added some teleporters to the top left and right side that lead to each side on the outside; but for the most part I just stand on the platform in the middle and as the mobs pile up directly below me I kill them via some sort of ranged weapon. Quite a simple design really.

Walking mobs can jump up to 5 blocks, but 6 if the top one is a slope, so try digging some pits 5 blocks deep. Also monsters can't climb rope so if u ever get stuck in the pit try adding a rope, you'll find them in chests and pots around the place

I thought most mobs such as zombies or slimes can jump just as high as the player. Which is 6 blocks.

I think zombies and other walking ground mobs lose 1 block jump height underwater while the player gains 1 block.

And since 1.2 introduced the ability to walk up to one tile, both player and zombies can actually jump up to 7 blocks (6 blocks high and if you press the arrow key toward the direction of that block, you can walk up the 7th block).

What is the best way to get the laval for the traps though? I've heard of using the buckets but it seems like it would take hours going back and forth collecting lava for the pits lol

I just recently went to hardmode for the first time, and I got tired of constantly being killed on blood moons, so I built a nearly impenitrable perimiter. Just build a 4 wide glass dome all the way around your base. Fill in all the background spaces with glass walls and use acuators, wires and switches to make doors, but remember to use blocks that can not be corrupted of hallowed. The only problems I have with this is the occasional wraith, and monsters leaking out of my shining mushroom farm. With the 4 wide glass perimeter, I find it looks the best to use wood for the underground parts.

If you want to use lava pits anywhere, there is a duplication glitch with buckets. You should be able to find it on youtube, or the Terraria wiki.

you only need a little bit of lava. keep it shallow so that loot is destroyed.

My newest Creation, that should help you out :3
Only Vampires and Parrots get stuck outside on the walls, but for some reason the vampires don't transform to break in...
You can add traps from both sides to solve the Vampire/Parrot problem :3

I usually build a house on a mountain and bomb everything under my house so it doesnt become corrupt or easily attacked.
