Terraria
Pickaxe vs. Drill
Im kind of new to Terraria (40 hours), is there any real differance between a drill and it's pickaxe counterpart?

pickaxe is better to defend yourself whilst digging due to the swinging motion plus it isn't as noisy as the drill

Pickax is better also beacuese the strongest pickax is also the strongest wood axe

Picks do swing and are indeed less noisy, but when it comes to just mining they are functionally the same, given that they are made of the same materials, of course.

I never got this either. I always preferred drills, but there's no drill version of the picksaw.

I always liked the drill's "bzzzz" better than the pick's "whooshwhooshwhoosh", and if I get attacked, I'm smart enough to switch weapons.
There isn't really a difference, so choose what you prefer :greenslime:

there is the hamdrax (now just the drax.)

the picks are better only because they have knockback which allows them to become legendary instead of godly.the only drill that can be legendary is the drax.

Real men mine their minerals using copper shortsword.

drax can't mine lihzahrd brick. Though I suppose that doesn't come up often, I'd rather have the option. plus I'm pretty sure picksaw is faster.

I prefere pickaxe axe, pickaxes since pickaxe axe actually has a slight speed boost since well, drill it goes mine, second, mine but pick is just mine mine mine, it's just my opinion, i've found out even a orichalcum pick is faster then drax, but nothings as good as picksaw :P

Pickaxes are faster than drills because they seem to benefit from melee speed bonuses, which drills do not appear to benefit from. With full melee Hallowed the endgame and near-endgame picks are currently superior to their drill counterparts purely because they remove bricks at a much more rapid rate.

While you DO have a point, the wiki says
increasing "melee attack speed" via accessories and armors will not increase mining speed; however, the set bonus from Mining armor will increase mining speed. Testing indicates that the "+% speed" from the "Common" category of weapon reforges on pickaxes do increase the mining speed of the pickaxe, so if you have a surplus of resources it is a good idea to keep re-crafting your pick until you make one with a "+% speed" bonus on it.

Only seems to effect post 1.2 picks Batabii. I've tested it myself and it noticeably effects the Picksaw, Hallow Pick-Axe, Spectre and Clorophyte picks. Pre-1.2 picks do not appear to be effected.

The actual speed benefit comes in the form of faster swings rather than more efficient mining. They're faster purely because they're hitting fractionally more rapidly rather than in some way upgraded mining tools.

That page implied that the swing speed (attack interval) does not actually affect mining speed.
