Manually changing resolution?
Bare with me, I'm on a tragically old PC, I'm upgrading over the holidays, but for now, I have this question:

My monitor is a 1600x900 monitor. My PC's too old and weak to run Terraria at that resolution (lol), however, when I installed it, the game for some reason defaulted to 1280x1024, my monitor letterboxed it, whatever. I enjoyed that just fine. Framerates were terrific at that resolution. No problems. However, out of curiousity, I went to change the resolution to my native 1600x900, noticed the awful performance, and went to change it back, but suddenly, 1280x1024 wasn't an option anymore. My only options are either my native 1600x900, or a handful of much lower resolutions that I'd prefer not to play. I probably lost 1280x1024 because the vertical resolution is beyond my monitor's native resolution, but the weird thing is that 1600x900 is the only 16:9 option available to me. All my other options are 4:3.

Anyway, I tried forcing my monitor into 1280x1024 using Nvidia's tools, and then launching Terraria, but that still didn't enable the resolution in the Terraria settings. So, I'm wondering, is there a way to manually change the resolution of Terraria? Forcing my monitor into 4:3 and then launching didn't do it, but is there a way to force Terraria itself into a resolution it's not allowing by default?

Thanks much!

Leave your monitor at its native resolution, and play with the Terraria resolution settings. You can do this when you first go to the game menu and choose Options then Resolution.

You can also choose to play in windowed or full-screen mode.

One thing I did have to do is that sometimes when I changed game resolution, it did not "apply" right away. I had to change it to full-screen then back to windowed mode for it to change.

Windowed lets you play basically any resolution you want.

I have a slightly similar issue. My computer is too terrible to run the game at high res. But me in my infinite wisdom decided to put it at max resolution to test it out. now it says that i dont have a powerful enough graphics card and wont boot up the game.

but now i cant get into the game to change the res back because it fails to launch. I reinstalled the game and the problem persisted. any help?

i play on my mac mini, and i used the window setting i bring it down to the smallest box, and change the lighting to graphics low, and if you have a GPU you can try to find drivers to overclock the chip
Ok seriously? The last comment is telling people not to necro, and someone replies WITH A NECRO?

I wish they could start banning people for this.
Easy solution. Go into the ginfig folder (Its a text file) and manually change the res to the needed status.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
