Do you have an arena set up? It's best to set up traps to take care of the small stuff while you focus more on the pumpkings and mourning woods. Spiky ball traps and flame traps work well for this, assuming you've already looted the lihzahrd temple. You can also use lava, but keep in mind that this will trigger the enemies 10-frame invicibility and make them harder to hit with weapons. You can also lay out campfires and heart lanterns around the arena to boost regen, along with some small crevices of honey. All these effects stack, so don't be afraid to chug down a regen potion before the fight.
The recent update added a 2-heart cap to single-item healing, so it's more difficult to just stand in one spot and tank 6+ pumpkings while spamming magic weapons. You can swap out the charm of myths or ankh shield with a mobility item like wings or the hoverboard so you can get out of a tight situation long enough to steal back your health.
As far as buffs go, you can add in a food item that grants the well-fed buff (such as bowl of soup) to further boost damage and speed. You can also purchase a crystal ball from the Wizard that grants the clairvoyance buff, adding even more power to your arsenal. Place it near your bed just in case you die.
Finally, make sure you place your bed somewhat distant from the arena, so you have time to get out before pumpkings start wailing on you. You can also assign the nurse near your bed for healing, though the pumpkings usually kill her after your first death of the night.
If you're still having trouble, feel free to come back here and go into more detail.
you could also use a heat ray instead of your shadowbeam staff, but that depends on where you are fighting the event.
oh and as soon as you get the bat scepter, swap out the leaf blower for it.
now then, you might want to add some things to your arena if you havent already. I got a general arena for basically any event, where I put down a campfire, a heart lantern and a water candle in the middle of it.
Not only does the shield already give 6 defense with no modifier, but it also absorbs 25% of damage done to players on your team when above 25% health. So if you are soloing the event, it's extremely helpful.
but if you ARE playing with a team, paladin shield can be really helpful indeed.
Sorcerer's Emblem is great, and Avenger is OK (not as good as Destroyer's, but it'll do) but other accessories and all modifiers look wrong to me. You need Menacing as it will greatly increase both your damage and survivability, far more than Defense would.
If you're having any survivability issues at all, use a Star Veil (or Cross Necklace). With Spectre, proper attack power and the extra invincibility time, you're pretty much unkillable in Pumpkin Moon. Wings aren't strictly necessary but they can provide you with a way to avoid damage if you run into a streak of bad luck.
A Shield is also only necessary if you're having survivability issues. They'll let you grab health pick-ups without getting knockbacked, otherwise a shield is pretty much useless.
The key really is offense. More offense is more healing, less damage taken because enemies die sooner, and more chance that your items will drop because you'll be killing more bosses in higher waves (which heavily affects drop rates). More frequent health pick-ups from bosses, too.
Yeah, you're right actually. It is also helpful on multiplayer, but what I was trying to say is that it is also helpful if he is doing it solo, since it absorbs damage.
3 damage per hit is nothing, though. It's a truly awful accessory for anyone but a tank in a group setting.
Unless... you think it actually still reduces damage by 25% when you're soloing?
I'm pretty sure what the shield does is transfer 25% of the damage your teammates take and apply that damage to you instead (which is why it stops doing that when you're under 25% HP, because it might kill you). It doesn't actually *absorb* any damage itself.
On a lone player its ability would do absolutely nothing.
On the plus side you now have the opportunity to switch a lousy 6-Defense accessory with one that's much, much, much stronger!
I'll go reforge my accessories to Menacing when I can.
Well, yes, I do have an arena set up, with the traps that you mentioned (flame, spike ball, lava) and the heart lanterns and campfires. Space is limited, though - there's only about 12 blocks of platform for my player to move around on. Maybe I should extend the arena?
Oh, I just remembered I had a Magnet Sphere. I'll use that next time!
Alright, I'll try to get a Destroyer's Emblem and replace the shield with a star veil, perhaps. Oh, and focus on killing more things.
Sorry for the unneccessarily long reply.
I believe the buff is 20%, but I agree, the 2 minute duration on it makes it kind of impractical.
If you've got mats to spare, why not... but for me it was too much of a hassle. I preferred going for a more polished permanent build, it felt like a better investment.
I haven't even made a good arena (I just use platforms, a campfire and a heart lantern) and that would be a permanent investment as well. I'm not at a point where I'll invest in a 2m buff.
Yes, well, I could cheat, but I'm not going to.

Granted this isn't the most effective design, my friends and I just adapted our old arena for pumkin moons. At first I didn't want to do this, but it's really needed to get rid of all the trash mobs so you can get to the later waves. With this design, if you are standing on the bottom row of platforms, most mobs will just drop down into the traps.
