Please help: Map suddenly completely black?
My husband had part of his map partially but permanently blacked out the other day, and I just now had my entire map turn black like this: http://cloud-4.steampowered.com/ugc/559862403043175221/ABB628AF0F47765C8C6C0011F90B1737900B5154/ (someone else's screenshot but looks just like what I have). Nothing shows up even if I go back to places I've been, it just stays black.

Bug? Corrupted map file? Server glitch? I've tried searching for solutions, but found nothing. Really hoping someone here can offer advice because we've been having so much fun playing together, but not being able to access the map after putting so many hours into the game is just... UGH.

Thanks for any help!

I never use my map, but I've seen this happen to the minimap, which I assume uses the same algorithm and can suffer from the same issues.

Tabbing through the map types sometimes fixes it for me, but not always. Other times I just have to Alt+Tab out of the game and it's fixed when I come back.

Quitting the world and reentering it should also have a good chance of fixing the issue.

I highly doubt this problem can become permanent.

WHEW. Close/restart worked for me. Thanks for the tips.

My husband, however, has tried these multiple times and no dice :\ He just tried backing up and deleting his map file. He says the world is as it should be, but the map has "reset" so he would have to go back and "rediscover" everything to update his map.

There have been cases where your explored area turns "unexplored" again. Happens once in a while in multiplayer mode. Just run through areas u been before.

I just had the same problem on my terraria map. I found the solution to be that there were too many periods in the name of the map file. And there were extra copies of the 959757264.map file I had to delete that had extra periods in the name.

C:\Users\YourUserNameHere\Documents\My Games\Terraria\Players\YourTerrairPlayerNameHere\959757264....map

I renamed the 959757264....map back to 959757264.map and and deleted the extra 959757264...map and 959757264..map, now my map now shows normal. This happened to me when Terraria auto-updated on steam and i moved my map and player to the cloud then back.

Hope this helps someone out there, it was frustrating at first. :P

Hey, I came from the 1.3 future!
I don't know if this works for you guys, but give it a shot. First, (if you did) remove the Player AND world from the Cloud Save. Then, restore any Terraria-related component from the Recycle Bin (it's optional to move your [playername].plr file, but it's a most likely chance that your inventory will be changed into that file, so you can leave it in the Recycle Bin if you want). Then, check your Worlds folder in Documents\My Games\Terraria , see if there's any ''duplication'' (delete any file that doesnt match [yourworldname].wld OR [yourwoldname.wld.bak . Now, save everything, and run your Terraria world! Good luck, hope it works!

Thank you!! Is there anyway to send the files to the cloud without the game deleting the character, map and world data?

There is a possible way to save your files to the cloud without taking any risk, in the future, not for now. However, it's possible for me, but testing it is quite buggy, since the 1.3 update has recently came out. I don't want to make people take risks, so I'll update this post often whenever I find a more solid solution. Pun not intended.
If you save your character to the cloud, it will delete map data. I tested this numerous times. You will have to rexplore everything. Not sure if this helps or was the problem, but it happens.

I really recommend NOT to use the Cloud Saving. It's still in Beta/Alpha or whatever, it's quite glitchy. One might result in a permanent deletion of world and/or character, if not cautious.

Alright, I'll wait 'til then. :happy_creep:

more than three years later i shall ressurect this thread to make new players aware that you better not use the cloud "feature".

have a black map now.... that'll teach me to never use terraria on multiple pc/ laptops. have map files but no map hast more dots than needed. bummer~
