My vote goes for the spear or the boomerang if you're asking.

You only said the 'best' not most powerful, both of these weapons, particularly with modifiers are powerful enough to fight off most early game threats before you can gain a foothold and manufacture your own weapons reliably.

Ball O' Hurt is fairly effective, Spiky Balls are effective to set up before the fight. Also Phase Blades and Blade of Grass are great melee weapons.

How do you get nights edge?

The Star Cannon is absurd DPS, but unfortunately the ammo for it (fallen stars) is incredibly difficult to obtain compared to other forms of ammunition.

i use a ruby staff with magic buff equipment it owns

You can get a nights edge by combinding the underworld sword, jungle sword, muramsa(found in the dungeon), and lights bane from demonite bars from killing bosses such as the eye of cuthlu or eater of worlds
