Yup, the pick does pretty much everything now. The hammer has been reduced to nothing more than a cosmetic tool (it changes the shape of blocks when you hit them with it so you can make terrain like slopes on your own) and the axe pretty much just chops the trees themselves. You can now effectively play 99% of the game with only a pickaxe for tools on you.
Which is still something you'll only be doing at your house for the most part. About the most useful thing it does away from home (iirc) is break shadow orbs but I generally use bombs for that anyway so it doesn't help there. I generally kept all of the tools on me anyway when I played but from what I remember (it has been a little while since I last played) I almost never used the other two tools.
No, the pick didn't always do so much. It was changed back in the 1.2 update and became the primary tool then. I have no idea why the change was made but I can't say I don't like it. I may still carry around all the tools but having the option to leave them behind if I want to (and certainly keep them off my top row) is nice.
wud wood blocks? like living wood or de small 1block trees?
who needs a pick wen u can get a pickaxe axe?
