What can I do with a fallen star

just randomly found one in my first world generated when it fell from the night sky, is it rare? does it have any effect

They're damn common. You use 10 of them to craft the mana stars which increase your maximum mana.

Also can be shot with a star cannon.

They have some other uses aswell I think. I know Star in a Bottle is another thing you can do with them.

If you find something and want to know what you can use it for, the Guide NPC can help with that.
He will show you the recipes for stuff, and it will list the items needed to make that item, and the required station needed for the craft to work.

You can make Jester Arrows, Star in a bottle, and Mana Crystals with Stars. They aren`t very rare and can only come in the night. And I think that now it only takes 5 stars to make a Mana Crystal. (Tip: Semm that this one area isn`t getting many stars? There might be a FLOATING ISLAND there! Yes, a floating island.)

400 max mana. And remember, the Guide will show you whatever recipes you need. I'm posting to remind you to save your stars, no matter what. They are also used in an inadvertant way to hint to you where there might be floating islands. If you are in an area at night and can hear falling stars or just notice that they never seem to appear there, it's a good bet that somewhere close to that area is a floating island.

The star cannon has some unique properties which is why you should save the stars. I didn't at first, after I maxed my HP. I like to keep a few stacks in my safe in case I want to use that gun.

The maximum mana obtainable using Mana Crystals is 200, though you can get more with certain armors and accessories.

Not 10 stars, now 5 stars=1 mana crystal. In 1.2 reduced costs.
