Backing up character/world before Hardmode?
Listen. I want to have a backup of my character and map before I engage the Wall of Flesh. I know that a map backup will work, but I'm not sure if you can have two versions of the map in both difficulties (Standard and Hardmode).
And backing up my character being the same way. Can I?

I just want to know if it's possible. Please don't ask "why", it's for personal reasons. Thanks for understanding.

Simply go into Documents > My Games > Terraria and copy/paste the files in the Characters and Worlds folder onto your desktop. Then change the file name and plop them back in their respective folders. You now have two of the same world and character.

I was curious about this post, so I tried the same thing.

I renamed a copied map, and put it back into the folder.

The copied map worked fine, I destroyed a few things, saved, and went to my old map. The old map did not have what I destoyed in the copied map, so the two maps are functioning properly and independantly, it seems. but strangely, the copied map I renamed did NOT have the changed name, I just had 2 maps of the same name in my map list.

And for asking "why" I don't really see a problem there. As much work as I put into my main map, which is still not in hardmode, I don't want to Hardmode my map and come to regret it later.

I completely understand the idea of copies of a map, Hardmode and Pre-hardmode. I'm probably gonna do the same once (or if ever) I get my map done.

The world's name you started it with won't change, but the name of the file can/will. It tracks the world's name in the file itself and Terraria reads that in the interface, so you can rename a file anything wierd you want to and it'll still have it's original name. It'll read the maps alphanumberically based on the file name though, so as long as you keep track of which is which all should be well. If you can't then juggling is always an option, though more annoying in my opinion. Alternatively, I think TEdit would allow you to rename the Map's name to better keep track of it, though I haven't tried to tell you for certain.

Thank you guys so much. Now I'll have security of when the hardcore version of my character dies, I can resurrect him with the backup. :)

I think you mixed a few terms.

Hardmode character - same as your easy mode character but you're just in hard mode, which just means harder monsters. You can die as many times as you want (or rather, all accidental undesired deaths)

Hardcore character - whether you are in easy mode or hard mode, if your character dies, that is it for the character. He is gone.

Now one thing you can do, so that you don't have to keep getting confused with game world names (since it has been shown that the internal map name can't be changed without maybe some external editing), then you can just create 2 worlds.

In the first world, keep it all nice and neat with the home you probably spent a long time building. In the second world, make some shabby home for the NPCs to join and quickly defeat WoF to activate hard mode.

Now you have 2 worlds, one in easy mode and one in hard mode, without getting confused on the map list of which one is which.

I'd go with navorskatie's method. It's got the added bonus of allowing you to access both the crimson and corruption, which is very helpful if you want to get all the widgets.

If you just can't bear to leave your world, do keep in mind that you'll likely need at least two different hardmode versions of it to access all the ore types. Play one normally, and keep duplicating the other before you pop the ores so you can filter in all the types your first hardmode world copy missed. Remember that you can load up Piggy Banks and Safes with items you want to swap between worlds- like your character's personal inventory, what's stored in those items will stick with your character no matter what world they go to.

Wait. Wait wait wait wait... hold on. I started in Softcore. Are you saying, that when I enter Hardmode and die, I won't lose my character? The whole permadeath thing is only if you create a Hardcore character?

Hardmode and Hardcore are two entirely seperate things.

Hardmode is what happens when you kill Wall of Flesh with any character.

Hardcore is something you choose when you create your character that determines what happens when you die. Hardcore is the one that means you get 1 life, that's it. Character is gone.

Softcore characters can die however many times you want, no matter what mode the map is currently in.
