In addition to this, spend most of your early game building a safe place to live & build other things.
Kill a lot of slimes during the day, make torches and find entrances underground and explore a bit. Destroy every pot you find and open every chest you come across and make sure to take the chest. Early game is hard, but once you start to get better mats and better gear, the easier it gets.
My strategy is boring but usually involves exploring the caves you can find near surface and opening chests/pots there, getting some of those free items, then I'll go back to spawn and dig the hellevator with copper tools (a 2 block wide hole that goes vertically down as straight as possible).
Digging that hole lets you clear up an important route to the bottom of the world, you also get materials to build with obviously, and along the way you will find some ores and tons of natural caves which you can use later to explore and find more resources.
After the hole is dug usually in the process I've peeled off and explored a few caves that I've found and if you're lucky you might have found a few hearts, iron ore, silver, gold, whatever...
It just kind of relies on a bit of luck to find useful things...
Another strategy if you really hate dying earlygame... your character can visit multiple worlds, so you can make a few different worlds, enter caves on the surface, loot them for hearts + chests, etc. then go back to your 'main' world and you get to keep all the loot you found. For co-op play this can be sometimes somewhat necessary if you get really scarce heart spawns.
no but really just try getting wood, make a crafting bench, make some platforms, and build a sky house.
how i did it at least.
