This game is impossible without a guide.
Dig more , add walls , chop trees to make a door and furniture , now you live in a mud hut , slightly better than a grave.
Find shiny hard rock , METAL , oooh shiny , make things dig better , kill better , OH $#@% big eyeball , die lots , maybe win.
Seriously though , trying to survive is HOW you play the game , you start off just trying to survive those zombies and eyeballs that show up at night time, then you get comfortable enough to adventure underground and find some neat stuff.
Don't be discouraged , just take small steps , the staff you start with summons a bird that can help you by killing weak slimes automatically , once you have a safe house you can start digging below it to find ores , make armor ASAP it will help you to not die , even wood armor is better than nothing.
