The Lava Charm is an item that can be found in cavern Gold chests and grants immunity to lava for 7 seconds. The effect stacks with the Lava Waders for a total of 14 seconds. The Lava Charm can also be used for short periods of time on Meteorite.

When the Lava Charm is equipped, a 'Lava' bar will appear where the breath bar usually is. It starts empty and fills over seven seconds. When the wearer comes into contact with lava, instead of taking damage, the lava bar will empty at the same rate. Only after it empties fully, the player will be burned by the lava. Once the player exits the lava, the lava bar will begin to refill and the player will be able to go in lava again after it fills back up

There are two items that directly render lava harmless (although both tempoarily), them being the Obsidian Skin Potion and the Lava Charm.

The Lava Charm is preferred because it recharges and allows for infinite use. You'll be invincible to lava for seven seconds after entering it. After this you will take damage as usual.

You can also use the Obsidian Skin Potion instead. If i recall correctly, you will need a Fireblossom, Waterleaf, Blinkroot and a piece of Obsidian to create the potion, and consuming it will grant you two minutes of immunity to lava and fire blocks like Hellstone or Meteorite.

There's also other alternatives that might help you conquering lava- for example, Water Walking Potions, the Obsidian Rose and our great friend, the Lava Waders.

Water Walking Potions allow you to walk on any liquid without taking damage or being slowed down. You can press your "down" key to enter whatever liquid you're standing on, but you'll still take damage if you're not using any of the before mentioned items.

The Obsidian Rose is a rare drop from Imps- it grants you 50% lava damage resistance and, as such, twice as long as usual to get out of the puddle of liquid stone. Simple as that.

The Lava Waders are the most rewarding, but also the most time-consuming to get. You must have Waterwalking Boots (found in Water Chests), an Obsidian Skull (crafted with 20 Obsidian) and the Lava Charm (rare find in the Deep Cavern layer) and need to have a Tinkerer's Workbench (not certain what it's called- buy it from the Goblin, whom appears after beating the Goblin Army). From there, you can make Obsidian Water Walking Boots and make those into the Lava Waders! This is one of the highest rarity items you can get pre-hardmode.

Enough about getting your hands on them, what do they do?
They function the same as the Lava Charm, but additionally they protect the wearer from fire blocks and allow the wearer to walk on any liquid. Reforging them is rather expensive but since you likely won't be using them in combat this shouldn't be an issue.

I hope i resolved your problems and clarified the subject of lava immunity,
