Hammer not working

When building with wood sometimes I want to remove a piece. I use the hammer, but all it does is reshape the wood, not remove it.

Is this a glitch? What am I doing wrong?

pickaxe is for all blocks (including all types of wood, although not the trees themselves) axe is for trees, and hammer is for walls and reshaping blocks. all of those can function as a less effective weapon too. as for other tools, they should tell you enough on what they do when you hover the mouse over them.
