Is bringing items from another world to a new one technically cheating?
Today, I was playing with friends and we made a new world to play on, and new charecters. One of my friends says they want to bring items from a world they worked on for a while. We said no, and we went into a whole arguement of how that is chearing. So, I decided to ask the whole community what they say if bringing items from another world to a new one is considered cheating. Yes tho, it depends if we want to bring it. but the majority with this world is to start with scratch.

it is cheating :)

If it's purely cosmetic I wouldn't be too hard headed about it, If it's an item that gives him a pure statistical advantage over you and your other friend don't tolorate it.

If it's a recipe for crafting then I would be heavy handed on the gavel about it until hard-mode since the drop rates for stuff like ankh shield components are pretty few and far inbetween.

Is it cheating? No, your friend obtained the item legitimately through legitimate circumstances so I wouldn't call it cheating.

Is it disruptive to the spirit of the game? Sure, but I'm not much of one to crawl under people's skin for bringing their wig with them. (even if it DOES sell for a gold.)

Thank you for helping out.

Calling cheating is absurd. But even saying it's against the spirit of the game is doubtftul, because if the devs intended it so, they could have tied one character to one world, at least single player. But you can use one character in any world, so it's play as intended, because you invest playtime in anything you do.
In multiplay it's probably even less relevant, since people can share stuff there freely anyway. That's why I didn't even try playing on a server yet. It would ruin my motivation to progress through my own effort.

I hate when I go to start a new charachter and people are too lazy to restart and they bring midgame items.

its CHEATING, if they can achieve it in the world your playing currently and didnt obtain it legit from another world and it is at the appropriate tier of items your playing at. this is excluding some stuff, like golden shower if you had a corruption world etc. this is mainly for some stuff like bundle of balloons. you cant find 3 shiny red balloons in 1 world usually and if your world didnt generate a sandstorm in a bottle, im talking about that kind of stuff. its a pretty hard topic to debate, but im sure it should be easy to understand what i mean. especially the didnt obtaining legit part, doing it with no effort will be cheating always in my eyes.

In my opinion it just depends on what the overall goal everyone/you're going for.

If you're playing to beat the bosses with friends or by yourself, or even just playing normally and want to do it legitimately from start to end, bringing in weapons and items would make it less/not legitimate. (or in your case, not from scratch)

'Course, if you're playing purely for kicks, want to beat up bosses and see how powerful you can be, just building things, bringing in items wouldn't do harm.

But if you're trying to make the balloon bunch legitimately then good ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ luck.

It has defiled the sanctity of your virgin world, sowing corruption and sin in it's wake, and leaving the lives of all players devoid of meaning or purpose.

Why do you think aliens keep their existence secret?

Tell that to your blasphemer buddy who wants to bring hard mode items to a world still dabbling in wood and copper.

:)

If you feel like it's cheating, it's cheating. Just like how I feel like building arenas made of floating platforms when fighting a boss is cheap, so I'd be cheating myself if I did it. I mean, you get wings when the game intends for you to be able to move freely through the air and that's not when you're fighting the Eye of Cthulhu for the first time...

this depends if it's that character who created the items. for example: if you created an character in 1.1 and wants to move all that progress to a 1.2 world than its not cheat, but if you dont created that items than its cheat.
Chubblezap Nov 26, 2014 @ 8:07pm
If you could reasonably obtain the item with your CURRENT character setup and skill, than I say go ahead. But it's not like you could reasonably get a Snowman Cannon or something in Copper Armor.

As others have said multiple times, it really depends.

The nature of the item is, more often than not, what determines if you can brand it as cheating. There's absolutely no harm in bringing in a vanity item, or in some cases, chest specific items (such a lucky horse shoe) after you've found all the chests on that world.

There is also the possibility of certain tools or accessories that your group should have found but haven't that your friend really wants to have, such as hermes boots or maybe a flare gun, or whatever (assuming that you're well past early pre-hardmode).

Conversely, if it's a piece of endgame armor or endgame weapon, or even something much more advanced than you should have in your current progress on the world, then it's cheating.

I advise you to consider those factors before saying yes or no. Use your own judgement.

i would say it would be kinda cheating if you bring in a hard mode weapon on a not hard mode world
Dowlphwin Nov 26, 2014 @ 9:19pm
You all please stop distorting that word. Cheating is acting outside of the logic of the game in an offensive manner. Even if you just do it in a more passive manner, it's called exploiting. Cheating is if you break the rules, and the game doesn't prevent you from bringing all kinds of stuff stuff to other world. I don't know whether there are server addons that limit this in online mode, but then you'd have to technically bypass those for it to quality as cheating.
Qutsemnie Nov 26, 2014 @ 9:34pm
Cheating or not cheating. Irrelevant. Fun ruining friend move? Yes definately. Just explain to him for coop to work it has to be cooperative not "follow the bad ass".
