Everyone else has pretty much covered everything. Of course, there is the neptune shell that lets you breathe forever underwater, but that is a hardmode item. Early on, there are gill potions. Also, killing sharks will eventually give you the diving helmet, when combined with the breathing reed will let you stay underwater for a while.

to make a gills potion, you

harvest waterweed from the desert,
then you wade into the ocean and take some coral,
then dig up some sand,
bring it back,
melt the sand into glass,
make bottles.
put one of the bottles on your workbench to create an alchemy station
use wood to build a keg,
put the keg in water,
then make bottled water.

then go to your alchemy station and make the gills potions

it sounds more complicated than it is.

you can get all the ingredients in one pass and it's really quick to craft once you get back home

i'm gonna do this as soon as i get off skyward sword

i actually did something similar in the crimson for farming enemies for money by placing a campfire and a giant wall so enemies would only come from one side

Why would you want to submerge a keg in water? Its only use in the game is to produce beer (which is an ingredient in molotov coctails for some reason... Must be a very strong kind of beer...), but has absolutely no connection with filling bottles with water.

All the items that are used for water exploration in game (if I remember correctly) are:

Easymode items:

-Gills potion (found in regular chests/pots, allows you to breathe underwater for a couple of minutes),
-Breathing reed (found in water chests, pretty much useless, holding it in your hand allows you to breathe if the reed reaches the surface),
-Flippers (found in water chests, when equiped allows you to swim with the jump button),
-Diving helmet (found in dead shark stomachs, when worn in the helmet slot (NOT the cosmetic one!) about triples the time it takes you to run out of air),
-Diving gear (crafted from the Diving helmet and Flippers, does exactly the same thing as the two items together, but only takes one accessory slot),
-Jellyfish diving gear (crafted from the diving gear and the Jellyfish necklace, exactly as Diving gear, only it also provides some pink light when submerged),
-Arctic diving gear (crafted from the Jellyfish diving gear and the Ice skates, provides stronger blue light when submerged and prevents breaking icy surfaces (when jumped on) and allows for normal walking on ice blocks),

Hardmode items:

-Neptune's shell (crafted from corals, goldfish, shark fins, sould of light, sould of night and souls of fright, allows unlimited underwater time and quick movement when submerged),
-Moon shell (crafted from the Neptune's shell and a Moon charm, combines both effects, but the merman effect will override the werewolf effect while underwater),
-Fishron wings (dropped by the Duke Fishron, when equiped, flying through the water becomes almost as easy as flying through the air with other wings)

you submerge the keg in water so you can craft bottled water. you need bottled water to make potions...unless they changed it, i haven't played in a year

One can make bottled water by standing by a body of water with an empty bottle.

k...wow, 400 hours in and i didn't know that...

I believe the Breathing Reed also increases your breath time in addition to letting you breathe near the surface, though not quite as much as the Diving Helmet does.
