(im on pre hardmode)

The Hornet Staff was the first summoning item I got and will very likely be yours, too, due to how simple it can be to get. Next up, there is the Imp Staff, made from Hellstone bars. And then there is the Slime Staff...which can be very hard to get. I don't know of any other pre-hardmode summoning items myself.

Tbh mine was slime staff, me and my boyfriend were roaming and we killed a slime (pre hardmode) and we got the slime staff . We didnt even kill eye of cthulhu xD
