Yes that is a very usefull starting item, but it can get even better...
Later in the game you will find a certain NPC that can sell you the "Tinkers workshop" which is used to combine various accessories. You can use that to combine those shoes and the spiked gloves (you find them in chests above the ground) to allow you to climb walls!
Keep on playing Terraria, it's a wonderful game that keeps getting better the more you play it

You'll crap yourself when you find climbing claws. But then you'll crap yourself when you make Tiger climbing gear,and then you'll crap yourself again when you discover Master Ninja Gear
