hardmode has a lot more possibilities.
ok, what about Sandstorm in a Bottle?
ok thanks
Bundle of Balloons is nice, though, if you want to go to the trouble of generating and ransacking all those worlds.
Pre-hardmode, I usually end up with approximately:
Obsidian Shield
Frostspark Boots
Band of Regen
Honey Comb/Sweetheart Necklace
Tiger Climbing Gear
Maybe Magma Stone, if I'm lucky.
For hardmode, it depends on what class I'm playing. My various setups are as follows:
Summoner:
Wings
Pygmy Necklace
Necromantic Scroll
Papyrus Scarab
Celestial Stone
Avenger Emblem (to switch in while summoning minions)
Hercules Beetle (to switch in while summoning minions)
Mage:
Wings
Celestial Stone
Sorcerer Emblem
Celestial Emblem
Destroyer Emblem
Ranger:
Wings
Celestial Stone
Sniper Scope
Destroyer Emblem
Ranger Emblem
Melee:
Wings
Celestial Stone
Destroyer Emblem
Ankh Shield
Mechanical Glove
You may have noticed a pattern. Besides wings, the Celestial Stone is, in my opinion, by far the best accessory in the game. It's one of the few items that every class can benefit from having, and it easily finds a place on any set. I didn't even plan to put one on all of my characters, it just fell into place on each of them when I went to optimize their sets.
Fire Gaunlet
Master Ninja Gear
Ankh Shield
Frostspark Boots
Fishron Wings
aaand Celestial Stone.
The Celestial Cuffs outright changed the way all mages work by itself when they were released. This this is GOOD, the amount of extra utility it gives to mages is insane.
Ranged:
You won't find much better than the Sniper Scope, giving 10% damage and crit chance to every ranged weapon is pretty hard to pass up, despite rangers being a bit lacking in the accessory department.
Melee:
Fire Gauntlet gives you literally everything you could want and more. It even lights up your pickaxe! In group situations though, my favorite melee accessory is Paladin's Shield. It let's you damage sponge with zero effort, and the damage from your friends rarely ever breaks 2 damage because of the double armor calculation.
but here is what i use and i think is most suited
this is mage stuff i'm to lazy to write all

plus with an umbrella you can be in the air longer.
But what if I don't want to be in the air longer or the hook misses, or I hit the wrong hotkey to switch to the umbrella? It's nice to have a truly reliable line of defense against such a deadly phenomenon of gravity and the harmful effects of electromagnetic repulsion at impact.
Plus I personally don'e care for the bundle of balloons (at least, not enough to raid that many worlds and do that much searching) when a horseshoe balloon gets me double jump, the added jump height, and fall damage immunity.
There's a cool technique you can use to avoid taking falling damage even without the Horseshoe, it's called "don't jump down pits".
Seriously, though, in a game in which you can mold the environment to your whim, if you ever die of falling damage, it's because you did something dumb. Especially now that there's rope you can use to drop down safely.
I cant believe I keep forgetting it even though I get several hundred on every new char I make before I even go mining.
