but if your looking for defense and melee power try molten
crimson gives a general 6% boost to all damage and gives a great regeneration buff.
if you dont get hit a whole lot, the regen is better than the extra def.
Now, of course, once you reach Hardmode, you're going to need a lot more than the Meteor Armor's somewhat negligible 16 Defense, and even the Molten Armor's 25 Defense is going to prove inadequite. What can you do to mitigate this? Find the Goblin Tinkerer and a bunch of nice Accessories, of course! Just find a set of Accessories that you really like, and then go to the Goblin Tinkerer with plenty of coins. Reforge as many as you're able to Warding (+4 Defense) so that you'll have 20 bonus defense at least. The Obsidian Shield provides 2 Defense by default, in addition to making you immune to Knockback and the Burning Debuff. Assuming you wear Molten Armor and have 5 Warding Accessories, one of which is the Obsidian Shield, you'll have 47 Defense, which is more than adequate for early Hardmode.
Once you've started Hardmode, however, I would recommend you go out and get a suit of Palladium Armor or better. Don't even bother with Cobalt Armor, as only it's Ranged variant provides enough more defense than the Pre-Hardmode equivalent to be worth switching out (for example, Magic Cobalt Armor has 16 Defense, and Melee Cobalt Armor has 26).
No, but boomerangs and projectile swords work also. I have beaten wall of flesh lots of times with melee just to prove my point.
Pretty much this
