Purple stuff on stones - What is it? And will it facilitate Corruption spread?

I couldn't find info on this, so I'm asking here. What is that pruple vegetation on stone blocks that can be found in some underground areas? Where does it come from? And does it count as an occupied block like vines and thus helps the spread of corruption across gaps? (Same question for icicles actually - but those survive lava, so I'd assume not.)

Its moss. Just decorative, I think it gets destroyed if its corrupted.

Moss, they are purely aesthetic and can only grow on regular stone, also they come in different colors. However it is believed that you cannot get red moss if you have corruption, same thing goes for no purple moss in crimson.

You'll know it's moss when you have a gold pickaxe or better and the stone takes two clicks to mine. Moss behaves a lot like grass, except that it grows on stone and spreads a lot more slowly.

Couldn't find info on its corruption threat though. It can become quite voluminous after all, and it's important to know whether this stuff could sabotage the containment ability of a 3 blocks wide vertical shaft.

I'd test this myself, but I'm not in hardmode yet and I have experimented with Corruption spread before and it's boringly slow and unreliable.

On the upside, I might include the moss in my recoloring experiments, haha. I have so much purple, it's dull. Properly green moss would surely look nice, and pink is always fun, too. ^^
