Fastest way to travel? (Early on?)
What's the cheapest, easiest to set up and fastest way to travel in a traight line or up slopes?
So far all I have set up is an ice bridge w/ a grappling hook to make me slide across it after grappling on the ground in front of me. And minecarts are a bit to expensive for me at the moment. Any suggestions are welcome, as what I have now isn't that efficient.

I'm afraid that's probably just about it, 'till later. xD If you like, I can get you some minecart tracks.

Thanks for the advice, and no thanks, I want to try and do everything singleplayer. At least I know now, and to be honest, when you get used to it it's actually quite fast! (Faster than minecarts at least). I'll try looking on the wiki once I get a bit more advanced.

Hermes Boots. If you have a grappling hook, that means you've explored the world and have most likely stumbled across a golden chest with some hermes boots in them. Also try searching the sky for some stuff. Namely a horseshoe and/or a balloon.

which you can turn into specter boots for slopes after having found the tinkerer.
and, if you already explored the jungle a bit more, you can make lightning boots out of those.
and if you explored the underground ice biome, you can even make frostspark boots, which help immensely to travel fast on ice.

Use a hoik. It takes a while to set up, but it can provide (almost) light speed travel.

Hermes boots and hook is as much as you can get till hardmode (until you kill Wall of Flesh) to travel faster. Also, since it's Halloween now you have chance to find a mount on which you can sit and travel faster, so use your chance, the drop chance is low and random from every creature.

asphault blocks. Stone + Gel

I'd have suggested that myself, but it's hardmode, if I remember correctly.

Fair enough - I'm more or less the same way.

What mount are you talking about? Because thats COMPLETELY false.

Thatnks for all the feedback. I've found some skating boots (can't remember the full name) which help alot, and I have hermes boots. I haven't found the goblin tinkerer yet because I'm a total wuss and spend too much time on land. Asphalt is hardmode only, but it seems like a good idea, and I'd rather not use a hoik, because I'm trying to play in more of a 'realistic' way. So far the ice method is quite effective with the skates, and until I can get asphalt or a hoverboard, I'll stick with ice.

I think I know what he means, he's talking about http://terraria.gamepedia.com/Mount#Pre-Hardmode

Mounts exist, yes I know, but NONE of them are a random drop from any enemy during halloween like they stated.

A good way to find the Goblin Tinkerer and the Mechanic are to smash a demon orb/crimson heart, fight off the goblin invasion and then go kill skeletron at the dungeon. They usually both show up in the dungeon as you're exploring.

Can confirm that Goblin Tinkerer can spawn anywhere on the map in the underground, counting the dungeon.

On the subject of mounts, you can also get a Slimy Saddle from King Slime or a Fuzzy Carrot from doing Angler quests, both of which are a bit (though admittedly not much) faster than walking.

Thanks for the helpful comments, and for starting the thread. I like the game, but not the slow movement, so this is a goldmine.
