Help--how to build an automatic dart trap with actuators
Okay so, I've entered hardmode and spread the Hallow over the top of my underground base. Overall it's not too bad at all, I can generally handle the mobs. What I -can't- stand, however, is the continues freakin' screeching and "shimmering" and "tinkling" from pixies scraping through my ears like nails on a chalkboard.

So, in addition to a lava pit trap I made specifically for dealing with ground-based mobs, I decided to make dart traps to deal with pixies/fairies/whatever, who all float above the ground and won't suicide into the lava pits.

I have two colums of dart traps on either side of my watch tower, which connects directly into my underground base via Wood Platforms. This way they can deal with the pixies/fairies while I'm underground, so I don't have to constantly go aboveground to silence the fairies myself.

HOWEVER, there's a problem. The traps have to block the sides of the watchtower, which are how I exit my base. So, I put Actuators on the dart traps and realized I had a problem. With the 1-second timer, it causes my dart traps to flicker in and out of the background while firing.

TL;DR: What I'm trying to accomplish:
1) Two solid columns of dart traps facing east and west
2) Will automatically fire continuously whenever I start the timer
3) Can manually toggle into the background at will (Separate switch)

Is there any way to implement this like so?

Set up an actuator system on a different wire color, I think. It might still fire 1 dart when you try to make them go to and from the background but otherwise ti should work.

Remove the actuators from the traps, and they'll stay in whatever state they were in. Then, make a separate column of actuated blocks next to the traps to serve as a door.

X=Actuated non-trap block
O=Background'd trap block

Voila.

What I would suggest is to snip the wire to the timer. if you dont have a switch, put down a switch or lever and wire it to the dart traps with actuators, and flip the switch to put them in an inactive block state. Then get your wire cutters and remove the actuators. The blocks can still fire even when made inactive and you can walk through them. Switch/lever can be removed and replace any wire that may have gotten popped and rerig your dart traps to the timer.

They will now stay inactive and fire with the timer regularly. You can do the same with other types of trap blocks as well.

Also the door I would rig with a different color wire to prevent, cross activation.

All you can do is remove the actuators once the dart traps are pass-through (or solid), you have to decide on a state you want them to be.

What's so bad about having them permanently pass-through? If it opens your house, just put blocks behind them to activate/deactivate with actuators (use different colour wire if it's directly adjacent to the traps). If there's some other reason, please say so and people might come up with a solution. :)

Sorry.

Thanks for the help y'all. Unfortunately from the sound of things, it was literally impossible to do what I was hoping to do, BUT there is a bright side. I managed to make a workaround, and wired up alternate exits to the base. The Dart Traps are now permanently solid and help to wreck everything. No more irritating pixie tinkling!

Its not impossible, just toggle the traps off, then remove the actuators, and if you accidentally remove the wire, just replace it. Blocks stay in an off state from actuators, even if they arent on them, unless toggled with another actuator.
