If you don't want to do that, you can manage in which house which NPC lives, by bringing the inventory up and clicking on the little house-icon on the far right side of the screen, right above the equipment slots.
You probably used that to check, if a housing is valid, but if you click on a NPC-head and then click on an empty valid housing, he/she moves there.
Btw, in your own house, for a spawn point, you only need a bed. No flat surface or light required, nor a solid block to stand on at night; it can be all platforms around. That way, NPC won't see it as housing and won't move in.
In case that got lost in the above: If you make the floor all platform, there won't be a spot to stand on at night, and it's not NPC housing. With that, you can put all the decoration/furniture in that you like.
Some windows are allowed for NPC. I have my Guide living in a draughty straw attic (as revenge) with deliberate holes. Check housing wiki for details.

Is it because we need to nerf Greninja?
I didn't knew, holes in walls can be up to 16 tiles big.
I thought the addition of glass walls removed that.
Who?
Guide opened the door to let zombies in when I was new and just built my house and was hiding inside.
I'm not sure the 16 tiles big is not a bit confused, but several 2x2 windows should work fine. Certainly a few random holes.
Its nice to come home and find a blonde in a nurses uniform in your bedroom.
Also, quick question, can I place dungeon walls in my house, then it be counted as invalid housing?
Some player-placed Dungeon Walls (I found out the hard way) don't count as housing. Don't remember which though.
Here's how I found that out:

Comparing wiki to the screenshot, Blue Brick Wall is suitable, Blue Slab Wall is not. You'd have to test with the others.

I think it's a bug, so it may be fixed one day. Or has been in the meantime, who knows? It's worth trying if you have the Wall, though.
According to the wiki, linked by Mickmane, you can build a valid house with dungeon brick walls, but not with dungeon slab walls.
Oh, I guess they edited it in the meantime to mention that. Hah. I just looked at the images to find out the names.

Well, that#s one way to handle it.
Another one would be lava and active stone blocks wired to a pressure plate for NPC's "well done", but whatever works, man.
