can not collect water in to bottle in water or other wise pre-harde mode???????

I was doing great and now all the sudden I can no longer collect water in a bottle to make potions any ideas ? I am pre - harde mode killed all but wall of flesh

Are you trying to craft bottled water from empty bottles, while near water, or are you trying to fill the bottles like a bucket by swinging it on water?

The former is the way to do it.
