Terraria
Question: Mushroom Biomes in the Sky layer/Space biome.
Right now I am attempting to convert one of the floating islands in my primary world into a mushroom biome for the Truffle NPC.

I replaced the top block layer of the floating island with mud and then planted mushroom grass seeds on both sides of the Sunplate house structure that was already there. I also have three single-block layers of mud on either side of the Sunplate house structure and one single-block layer on top of the structure. Each layer of mud is now covered in mushroom grass.

Whenever I approach the floating island now, the sky gets much darker, even during the day. However, I don't see blue mushroom shapes in the background and the music doesn't change. Keep in mind this floating island is located entirely in the sky layer (the wiki calls it the Space Biome) so you get the different music associated with that layer and harpies spawn there.

What I want to know is this: If you are trying to start a mushroom biome in the sky layer, what has to be in the biome to indicate that it is a true mushroom biome and that the Truffle NPC can live there? Does the sky layer override some of the features of the surface mushroom biome? And does this matter? Or is a surface mushroom biome in the sky layer not possible?

Any advice and/or assistance would be appreciated. Thanks for reading.

Everything should work fine, you might just need more mud/Glowshroom grass. I would recommend turning the Sky Island house into a Mushroom one to get more mud and Shrooms up there.
Yeah, maybe. I am gonna see if I can put some more mud in other areas and see if that works, first. If it doesn't, then I'll convert the Sunplate structre into a mushroom house.
Having glowing mushrooms on top may not be enough, you might need to make a glowing mushroom basement of sorts.
this is mine, try this

all i did was replace all the dirt with mud, planted shroom seed and waited
...took a little while though for it to grow

Yeah my first thought was there is probably a minimum block count on the mud (or maybe even mud with grass/shrooms showing)

(@Kentucky your minimap is freaking me out ^_^)

Whoa. Thanks for the screenshot, [K]entucky. I wish my sky islands were that big (O.O)

A basement is a good idea, too. It looks like I'm going to have to renovate some more.
Mine's a little bit more elaborate:

FWIW, building the house with glowing mushrooms might count towards the biome needs

oh.. well that just makes mine look like crap xD
It's settled, then. I'm building a basement. Thanks, guys!
I have a habit of doing elaborate sky islamds for some reasons, I did a jungle one for the witch doctor and workshop for Santa
Hey... I'm doing the same thing! Except the "Jungle Island" is for my Wizard NPC. What a coincidence...

Okay now I want a Santa Sky Island so bad. That rules.
The reason you don't see the background mushrooms is that you are just too high up. Background objects get scrolled down as you move upward. As for the music, the space biome music simply has a higher priority than the mushroom biome music. The mushroom biome is the only biome where the sky gets dark even during the day (assuming you didn't build it in the very upper part of the space biome), so if the background darkens when you approach it it should be working. The Truffle should be able to move in and mushrooms should still grow.

What is that thing behind you?

I first thought it -was- you, but looking at the enlarged screenshot I see you're wearing Spooky armour. Still can't see what that thing is, though.

Or is it your shield that looks like a leg of some critter, and it's a spiral shaped lamp behind you?

its a fairy bell (summons a randomly coloured pixie to provide light)
