Aside from making your home base and NPC town float, you can also build in the Hallow with no problems. NPCs can still live there and they will help to keep enemies away from your home base.
Personally, I don't think it matters where your home base is. Unless you use some sort of brick and cover the area around your home base with artificially-placed backwalls, you are gonna have to deal with enemies and invasive biomes at some point or other.
If you must built it on the ground, I'd probably go with snow as well. While ice can be converted, there isn't that much ice near the surface, so its unlike that the surface gets corrupted etc. Also I like the snow biome music, enemies and general look :)
Although... What about the underworld? NPCs should block the monster spawns, and you won't have to worry too much about invasions and the like. Plenty of lava for natural defense, so long as you have lava waders you should be fine. I suppose imps would be a problem, but you could dig out the underneath to keep bone serpents away. Just an idea.
Dude... You know... Clowns don't blow up houses anymore for a long time ago....
I used to play Terraria about 2 years ago. Just started getting back into it, so my info is a little dated. That's good to know about the clowns, thanks. I hated them soooo much.
I loved those clowns, they was the only enemy that can destroy our house, that's so sad they remove that power from him =(
I used to go harvest dungeon bricks and line the area around my house because it was immune to the clowns bombs. I even created new worlds just to go mine different coloured dungeon brick. I suppose it does remove one of the challenges of protecting your house, but they were such a pain to deal with. I'm glad they have had their block destroying power removed.
They, along with Creepers (Minecraft), are the singular type of enemy that SHOULD NOT exist in a building-block sandbox style game.
Having your hard work and constructions ruined by a random enemy spawn is horrendous.
But they are single only enemie that can make you scare of have your house down. This is my opinion, but I would love if the bring back that, cause we could face a little bit tinny reallity about our house and be prepared against some enemie. Those days, we just don't have to care about our house going down, then we make it just the way we want on the "f**k it" style... Just do a square and it's good, I don't know if you know what I mean... I like that danger and from nothing a enemie that can destroy my house just came and "f**k, have to kill it fast" or "need to build a trap to protect my house" THAT IT... I don't feel I need protection for my house...
Sorry for bad english, I'm from Brazil.
Before they changed them, every single Blood Moon I would get as far away from my town as possible in order to prevent any damage to my structures.
Zombies and invasions can still break down doors, thats fine.
But blowing up your buildings entirely and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ up something you could've spent hours building, which then takes 15 minutes or so to repair the holes and bomb damage, is only annoying and frustrating. It adds nothing to the game.
Wraiths and such can phase through walls. Including Wyverns if you're up too high. And all bosses.
Most other enemies, like Zombies, Possessed Armor, etc, can break down Doors.
If you let the doors open, they will not remove the doors, better way to fight against enemies that can brake down the doors.
