Well.. There isn't really much that you have to keep in mind when playing mage. But i have a few 'Ideas' which could help.

1st - Get maximum Mana. This is crucial for playing a mage-style-character, obviously.
2nd - Use potions! There really are a few useful potions which give you more magic Damage or Mana. Make sure to use these when attempting a bossfight.
3rd - Dont build adamantium/any other hardcore ore masks. Sure, the extra damage is nice, but overall armor is just better.

Hope I was of use here.

also you forgot going to the dungeon for water bolt (aka the easiest spell to get most of the time and if you cant get it time to grind for ores and gems)

Get 8 gems A.S.A.P. it must be all the same of one gem. I recomend going for the amytheyst staff first, if it's a copper world, since its the easiest gem to find too.

As a guy who's played over 750+ hours of this game playing solely mage, I'd like to say a few things that would help.
1: Skybridge or a long flat piece of land. This will help you gather tons of stars for mana crystals.
2: When given the chance, Immediately go and break a shadow orb. Breaking one or 2 can give you the mana band, or the vilethorn. If in a crimson world, you can get the bloodrain spell.
Combine the mana band with a health regeneration band to make a mana regeneration band. Combine the mana regen band with a shackle to make magic cuffs. Lastly, combine those with a celestial magnet to make celestial cuffs. This item gives you mana when you are damaged, and massively increases mana star pick-up range.
3: After breaking a shadow orb, find a meteorite and mine ALL of it. Getting meteor armor is amazing for early mages, because you can use the space gun infinitely. It gives light, great dps, and is good all around. Meteorite has lasted me all the way to hardmode, so its definitely worth it.
4: When in hardmode, break ALL the demon altars you can find. I understand Lyph was saying don't build the hardcore armors/mask, but you should really get them because: They give 80+ mana and they give critrate and less mana usage.
5: Getting magic weapons in hardmode is DIFFICULT. The weapon you immediately want to go for is the crystal storm. The best way of getting these materials is going to hell and finding the hollow directly above hell. You can kill the fire imps and bats for souls of light, so its much easier grinding small creatures instead of difficult ones.
6. When fighting hardmode bosses, make arena's. Its impossible fighting on a normal landscape. The best arena i've fought with is the complete flat sky bridge. It allows for fast running and attacks, and allows regenerating mana quite easy considering most bosses can't keep up.
Those really are my general tips but if you want a super in-depth guide to the mage, just send me an invite.

* Adamantite

* hardmode. Hardcore is what you select during character creation - your character is deleted when you die.

Well, some people have different ideas of what a mage is. I personally think a mage is whatever does magic damage. Some people think that the Lazer Rifle, Space Gun, Nimbus Rod, etc are more like Ranger and Summoner weapons. But either way, here's the best strategy I can give you:

  • Find the Snow Biome. It's generally the closest one to spawn, and it is ALWAYS the same side as the Dungeon, which is opposite of the Jungle.

  • Get a Waterbolt. No matter what anyone says, Waterbolt is one of the best weapons in pre-hardmode. Just go down as far down into the Dungeon as you can, mousing over the books to find it. I beliee it's a blue or brown book on the shelf, but I can't remember.

  • Figure out if your world is Crimson or Corruption. Corruption is ideal for mages, but either will work.

If it's Corruption, go and break a few Shadow Orbs, fighting the Eater of Worlds for materials. Break them until you get a Vilethorn and a Band of Starpower.(More if you want other items.)

If it's Crimson, then go and break a few orbs, getting the Crimson Rod, and getting some materials from the Brain.

If you can't continue from here, let me know and I can supply more info.

Are you only saying that because it's long? If you didn't read it then how do you know if either of us are actually smart?

First of all, Lyph was the first person to post in this thread and he/she did not mention anything about a skybridge. That was Mez who brought up the skybridge.

Second of all, making a skybridge is just common sense. Falling stars, well, fall. Onto the ground. If you can make them fall onto a flat row of blocks above the surface then you can collect them more easily. Same goes with using your skybridge to prevent meteorite impacts.

Really, I don't know why anyone should post in this thread anymore if you're only going to read one word from each post we make.

For pre-hardmode, if you want the staffs and the robes for a mage character, the best way I've found to get them is to find the extractor (in golden chests in the cavern) and mine slush in the snow biome or silt anywhere else. You'll get all 8 of the pre-hardmode ores (even the ones that aren't on your world), all of the gems (including amber which can't be mined) and loads of money. Until you can get that, just use a basic sword or bow.

Also, try to find Tim (the skeleton wizard miniboss) in the cavern and get his hat. It gives a mana bonus when combined with the diamond robes. You can have whatever you like for the legs slot, although I'd go with a high defense item, because with a robe and hat you won't have much defense.

That's if you you want the pure wizard deal. Otherwise I'd go for the meteor armour with the space gun. I just spam it everywhere, its so good. I use it untill hardmode. Water bolt is fantastic in small areas because it bounces off walls, but I never liked it when you are out in the open, and it doesn't spam as well as space gun.

For hardmode, I've never played as a wizard, so I'm not sure on the kit.

You definately want to set up boss arenas for the hardmode bosses. The best I've seen is flat area with many levels made out of wood platforms with a crab pit and heart statues on either side of the crab pit. The crab pit has a crab statue spawning crabs, has a thin layer of honey, is near a campfire and heart lantern. When you are nearly dead you jump into the crab pit, taking their 1 damage over and over, and not the 50ish damage the boss will do to you, collecting hearts and drinking potions till you are ready to get back out and do some more damage to the boss. Although I think its a bit of an exploit with the crabs.
You definately want to set up heart statues and star statues connected to timers around your hardmode arena though.

As for collecting stars, I find I usually get enough to max out mana just wandering around at night killing zombies. Skybridges are definately useful for getting stars, but it does take a while to get the rope and and dirt to build a decent sized one. I know I've fallen off plenty of times while building them (accidentally running off the end while placing blocks), and doing so without some kit to save you from fall damage will almost certainly kill you. Skybridges are best left until you have hermes boots to take advantage of it, something to save you from the fall and plenty of dirt/mud/whatever blocks to build it with. I like to make them out of mud and place mushroom grass or jungle grass to get some biomes happening. Another negative of skybridges is they reduce the amount of meteorite you get (by a lot) if the meteor hits the skybridge.
Skybridges are great. I'd recommend having one before hardmode, just not too early.

Lastly, check out the Terraria wiki. http://terraria.gamepedia.com/Terraria_Wiki
It will have the answers to most questions.
:D That ended up being a bit longer than expected, but once I started typing I just kept going.
