Your spawn point house does not need to be an NPC suitable house, just big enough (can be all platforms for frame), with back walls, and a bed that you right-click.
Every time you right-click, it should tell you spawn point set, even if you already set it there.

I made that for my friends that came to test to set spawn point near the Minecart ride start. Note that all blocks around may well be platforms too.
you also have to make sure the house has background walls, door and a valid light source
No, you don't need a light source for a spawn point, and doors can be neglected when you have at least 3 spots with platforms for an entrace - in place of a door. (Possibly only 2 for a bit of roof, and just blocks around. Though I find all platforms around more convenient.)
