Alternative map generators
Are there any alternative map generators for Terraria? I know there's _editors_, but I'm looking for something that actually creates new worlds with different terrain features than the standard editor, since it's maps tend to look very similar :I

Thanks for the link - that's a very useful tool I'm going to use from now on.

However, it's not quite what I'm searching for. Actually I want something that uses different algorithms to create terrain. (Mountains, deserts, etc.)
Does something like that exist?

There is a mod called tEdit where you can manually create and change maps, as well as view existing maps to find out where certain items like Life Crystals are. I don't ever intend on using it, though, so I never bothered to find out where you download it and hence wouldn't be able to tell you.

Yeah, I know these, but I do not want to build a map myself, I want to generate one to explore. I looked through the forums and it doesn't seem like there's anything like that, though :I

Then just generate a random map with the game. If you want to change certain features, like which ores you get and whether you get a Corruption biome or Crimson biome, then use Terracustom. Terracustom also allows you to put pyramids, giant trees and floating islands in your map, and you can use it to affect how your trees look, what brick colour your dungeon is, and so on. Use tEdit to manually change the placement of blocks.

Hm, that's not really what I'm looking for. These things are all nice if you want specific biomes, background etc, but I want something that generates different geography.

Then go with tEdit and reshape your biomes. Or use Terracustom and add or subtract biomes.

Err... Why am I now starting to smell a trolling thread?

This is not a troll thread. I do not want to simply edit a map, but procedurally generate maps that have different geography than the default terraria maps.

But I checked the terraria forums. There doesn't seem to be anything like that.

Hm... too bad.

I have seen a tool, though, that actually generates different maps (Omnitool). However, it's very basic. So it seems to be possible. I guess, though, that they wrote a (simple) algorithm from scratch, and the default algorithm of terraria isn't accessible.

TerraCustom is probably as close as you'll get for now.

Um... thanks. This thread is a year and a half old, though. No real need anymore.

I'm pretty sure there is an alternate to omnitool, though it is super outdated and I no longer recall its name. :/ (It was on the old Terraria forum (before the official one came to be) so I wonder if it is even still around?)

Like for instance I remember having a world generated once where I think the surface was like a barren wasteland with lava pools and some of the world's 'evil' all over (this was one of the worst/hardest generations of the mod that I recall, I don't remember the other choices. xP)

It looks like custom generation can be done with tConfig...? I haven't actually seen an generation mods yet, but it might be something to look into.
http://tconfig.wikia.com/wiki/How_to_create_a_custom_World_Generator
(note: Looking it up tConfig has been discontinued but was replaced with tAPI, but then that was discontinued at the 1.3 update, so...)

I also just found this too: http://forums.terraria.org/index.php?threads/worldgen-plus-why-stop-at-a-world-when-you-can-have-a-multiverse.5022/
but it runs on tAPI and I'm not 100% sure what its like, so eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh.
