if you save and quit, any loot that was dropped on the ground disappears.
if you run out of inventory space and use a potion or the magic mirror to return home to stash your stuff, you can go back for the other stuff.
there is nothing stopping you from just "save and quit" to escape death, but keep in mind that if there is anything dropped on the ground, it will be lost forever.
plus, it's more convenient to just recall, instead of "save and quit" then reloading your game
At least in my case... So for me there is a point, even if i don't use the potions all that often; if at all. Seem to mostly walk back. ><
In the long run it is how long you want to wait before you can play again. Do you wait for the game to reload or do you use potion/mirror to insta teleport, or near instant.
Also like the person above you can change your spawn with a bed in a room.
the thing about that, every time they want to use it, they have to place walls and make a safe "home" before they can use the bed. and then their spawn point gets put there and they have to start there every time until they move it.
when I play, i just build my town near the original spawn point, eventually, i put a bed in there.
i will put a bed near the dungeon for when i do a prolonged adventure down there.
later on, once i get to hard mode and get the steampunk girl to move in, i will buy a few teleporters and then i will wire them together to help me move around the world.
I usually put a teleporter in the jungle, and i will put one at the beach at the end of the world, usually opposite to the jungle because the dungeon is on the side opposite to the jungle.
teleporters are a pain to place all the wires but it's worth it because you only have to do it once and if it's a place you return to again and again, you're gonna be glad you did it.
Bring your blocks and backwalls with you when you go. And bring your bed with you when you relocate. Problem solved.
Actually, no table/no light/ no solid block to stand on at night will prevent your NPC moving in where you might not want them to.
I always have a pile of beds in my piggy bank, and a stack of slime blocks in my safe or inventory (you could take your favorite wood instead, pre-hardmode), to make platforms out of, and a workbench to make back walls.
I made this for my friends to spawn at the start of my Minecard ride when they came to test. (It's 13 teleporter stops from my bed, and 14 from original spawn point. Takes a while, and people tend to get left behind along the hops due to me being a terrible host ->lag.)

Note that all the slime blocks around it can be platforms.
