There's a wisp in a bottle that's not actually a pet but a third companion (besides pet and minion) that you can run around with. It gives off light.

The only two actual pets that provide light (according to wiki) are Baby Truffle and Cursed Sapling.

I don't remember how bright the Truffle is, but Cursed Sapling is useful because it's got the habit to circle round discovering unexplored areas. Like this:

The sapling is better.

I dunno. I prefer the Wisp-in-a-Bottle because it always stays in-front of your character. That, and all you need is the buff; you can call it once and then put the item itself away so that other characters can use it.

Both the sapling and the wisp can be used at the same time.

There are 3 light giving "companion" spells in Terraria:

1. Shadow Orb - Obtained by breaking shadow orbs in a corrupted world. Provides a small amount of purple light and is the only pre-hardmode light spell in the game. Very useful before obtaining a better one.
2. Fairy Bell - Obtained by crafting hardmode ingredients (a bell, pixie dust, souls of Sight and Light). Provides a good amount of coloured light that is different every time it's summoned.
3. Whisp in a Bottle - Obtained as a rare drop in a post-Plantera Dungeon. Provides a high amount of white light and can be somewhat controlled by using movement keys. Very useful.

Buy a mining helmet from the merchant?
Pause the game, and switch to armored helmets when in need.

To then stand in the dark? ;P

I just put torches into the enviroment (digging out 1 block, putting torch inside, safe from sudden water) before I had the Wisp. (Also visible in my earlier screenshot.)

I'm still doing that sometimes.

Btw, torches can be placed with that auto-pick appropriate item (you can define the key for that somewhere in the settings, I don't remember original one), so you don't need any torches in your hotbar.

Torches are cheap they're quick to place and the merchant sells them to you. You're better off uses torches or you can just use the: F9 key in game to change the light settings to make light sources brighter.
