Get water from above and make obsidian out of it to mine it away.
Second option is to drain it to the sides

Third option is to drop some blocks affected by gravity (like sand) above the lava into a 4 block wide tower sticking out of it, quit out of the world, then load it up again. This will destroy the lava where the blocks are so you can dig through them with a wall on either side to block the rest of the lava. It only works in single player though since you'd have to restart the server in mp.

If you prefer a wider tunnel through the lava you can always just make the tower wider

Obisidian Skin potions are the best way to deal with lava.

While that's true, it's not a method you can use early on and it doesn't help you for building your first hellevator. Lava just tends to be a bit of an annoyance in this game. I miss the days when you could just place a block of dirt directly on it and have it destroy the lava...

I suppose.
I never bother to make a hellevator until at least the Molten Pickaxe.

If you want to modify or work around lava you're better off re-directing the lava into another part of the cave that you don't want or can sacrifice. This is the better option mainly because depending if you have water then use that to make obsidian but if you don't have water at your disposal just re-direct the lava.

Well after playing 600 hours of Terraria I found it much easier to always have a hell-a-vator mainly for speed purposes since of needed to get to certain depths in the game for other areas eg: hallowed/crimson underground biomes. If you don't have a good pick-axe it takes forever to mine to hell expecially on a large world so if you're able to, attempt to spawn king slime and buy bombs and just bomb your way to hell.

Huh. You don't bother making the fast method to reach hell till you've farmed materials from hell? That seems a little backward, but I guess you wouldn't need to grab that much ore from hell before you could make one. I've always been a bit on the fence about the value of a molten pickaxe though since a nightmare/deathbringer does the job pretty well, faster if you're going through weaker materials like dirt.

Bombing is always a fun way to dig a hole but it does lack a bit in precision. If you're playing mp with just 1 other person a hellevator is pretty easy to make even on a large map though. It'll always take a while, even with tons of dynamite, but it goes by pretty quick with a nightmare/deathbringer pick and the smart cursor. The biggest delay in getting it done is always dealing with the lava...

if your digging a hellevator keep any water you gin in the hellevator cuz then u can mine through lava easily or you could just use obsidian skin potions

But then you have to deal with drowning, and that's MY biggest problem with Hellevators. You have to keep making air pockets or going to the top so you don't drown.

I find my way to hell using natural caves the first time.
While I am there I make Obisidan Skin potions and collect around 300 hellstone ore.

Because I only visit hell maybe twice before hardmode, I rarely feel that early hellevators are worth the time.
