The easymode alternative ores are not any rarer than the old ones. They also have no different bonuses. The only difference is that the newer ores are slightly more powerful (weapons do a bit more damage and armour is a bit tougher) and they lok different. Also, the tin pickaxe does not have the -1 range penalti the copper one has and the tungsten pickaxe can mine one type of blocks (I don't remember which) that the silver one can't.
The hardmode ores of the same tier do provide different bonuses to their alternatives, though.
Meteorite, but not corrupted blocks. That's what the tungsten can mine that the silver can't. For the corrupt/crimson stone, you need explosives or a nightmare/deathbringer pick axe.
As per the new hardmode metals, the palladium pick/drill was able to able to mine teir 3 hardmode ores. This is no longer true. It was patched, and in my oppinion, for good reason.
But yes, everything you've said is true.
You can get any of the easymode ores by using the extractionator. Then you can craft any of the armours and see for yourself how they look. And you can always wear one set of armour in the armour slots to provide the stats and another in the social slots to provide the looks, if you prefer the looks of the weaker set.
