It's a case of making several worlds to explore and have fun in. The bonus is that as your character gets stronger and better, exploring new worlds in pre-hard-mode should go very fast.
Long answer: Chest items are decided on a per-chest basis, based on a percentage chance that each item will be in a given chest. The only exception is the floating island chests, which will try to spawn one each of their unique items before spawning duplicates (though this does not guarantee all of those items will spawn, since you may not have that many floating islands). As a result, if no chest in the world triggers that percentage chance of having a particular item, you simply won't be able to get that item in that world. You'll have to make another world and try again.
Well that's simple enough. But what do you mean about a character getting stronger? Isn't that just based on your equipment?
I'm kind of a Terraria noob, still working on the ins and outs of the game before I try another world so mind the questions if they sound dumb.
Yes. As you get better equipment, your character gets stronger.
