Otherwise, you can find regular chests underground if you aren't too deep.
For gold chests, you'll want to look deeper underground. You can sometimes find them randomly in a cavern, or if you stumble across an underground cabin, there's always (or should be) one in that cabin.
If I were you, I'd consider going past the ice biome to search for the regular chests. Don't attempt a run through the crimson yet. Also, if you are still having trouble, consider making a new world. Your character can go between worlds without any trouble, and you'll probably benefit from the extra resources.

Focus on getting some decent equipment and raising your max health. Finding some chests will help with that, as they contain gear that will do things for you that iron and craftable metals can't.
Do also note that you'll want a decent ranged weapon.
