Unable to catch damselfish

I've built lakes on two floating islands and filled each with 300 - 400 buckets of water. I can catch tons of bass there, and I caught a quest fish (Slimefish); but I am totally unable to catch damselfish. Is there some special requirement ... like hardmode? I'm still pre-hardmode.

If you are catching any salmon along with the bass then you're in the right place but the drop rate for these 2 is pretty high compared to the damselfish. The angler potion will improve your chances to catch one.

Thanks for the reply. I tried another world, and I was able to catch damselfish just fine. I think the floating islands on my main world just aren't high enough. They're around 550 ft (medium world). Any idea what a good elevation would be for it?

Yeah, you need to be high enough. If you've got space music, that's a definite indication, although the threshold is a bit lower. It's hard to tell, sadly.

It's the right height when harpys are spawning so roughly around 350ft small. 650ft medium & 850ft large.

Problem solved. Made my own island at 650 ft over my spawn point. No harpies, a nice big lake, and damselfish. Thanks for the replies.
