Zombies keep coming into my home... newbie help XD
Hi
It seems that digging my home in the ground doesn't help me keeping zombies away...
I'm sure I close the doors everytime, but every night I have to bury myself and block them with stones in order to do my night business in a safe way XD
The hammer does not demolish the underground background, and it looks like I'm not able to make background walls for my rooms. Is it normal?
What did I forget?

Another problem: I can't find a way to biuld a house good for my guide.
I made one 9 blocks large, 7 blocks high with walls, a table, a chair and a torch, but the game still tells me it's not good. What should I do?
Maybe I have to wait until some point in the game? Defeating a boss or something like that...

Put a background furniture or banner INSIDE your house right next to the door. That way you are safe. Zombies can only open doors inwards but not outwards ! Besides try to craft something like a copper sword or find a zombie hand those weapons are usually good at killing zombies. Besides if you get bored at night in your barricaded house why not go mining underground ? Special night zombies only spawn at the surface.
Good luck on your adventure
Just put a 2-block deep pit in front of your door, like so:
.........x
.........x
.........x
¯|......|
..|___|

And they can't enter no matter what

EDIT: or if you put THIS shape, they are trapped until you kill them!

Mobs aren't smart enough to "check" above them when they jump, so they will get stuck against overhangs. Honestly if you just put one overhang on each side of your base, nothing will get in unless it can fly and you left the door open

You have to find the edge of the background and then knock a path to where you want to build. Can just keep it a thin line leading to your house.

If you're in the actual underground biome, turn on parallax scrolling in the options and it's easier to see what's Wall and what is empty background space. Not sure if turning off backgrounds works for that or not.

Also yeah you can't knock out walls if they're connected on all sides.

Thank you all guys!
I had more than "something" to learn about walls...
I think I'll place pits everywhere u.u
My problem was actually in my underground mines: a twiggy zombie kept on coming out from nowhere, but a friend told me that it's normal for them to spawn there if I don't spread enough torchs around (naturally, also if the mine's entrance was locked). So did I, and no more twiggy zombies^^

Torches won't affect monster spawns, that's a Minecraft mechanic I believe. If you place a crafted background wall, or completely fill in an area with solid blocks, either of those will prevent spawns in the area concerned. Or have some liquid on the ground - I'm not sure if water/honey will stop spawns but monsters definitely can't spawn in lava.

It's useful to understand how mobs appear. The game seems to pick a point in space within a certian range of the player, it picks a mob that fits the biome, then it go down until it hit a flat surface, and makes the mob appear. This means you will need walls right to the top to stop mobs from appearing (found this out the hard way when I kept getting attacked trying to complete my huge Plantera farm).

I would speculate that the spawn range is just off screen of wherever you are. Build a platform with the ground 4 blocks out of view and monsters will constantly spawn beneath you... actually that is a great farming method if you are a summoner ;)

Don't think the size of the mob matters either as I've seen Mourning Woods and Santa-NK1s spawn directly beneath me during events with certain designs.

It doesn't. However, sky seems to. Monsters will not spawn off the top of the screen if there's no platforms or blocks to stand on unless theyre harpies or other flying mobs,

Also mobs don't despawn instantly, it appears there's a hidden timer that despawns them after a certain duration rather than distance.

EDIT: that image may not be totally accurate. It probably changes based on your window size/resolution. I generally play at 1600x900 or a close approximation of that.

I have a bloody huge mine underneath my house (still growing... >_>) and I sometimes get rabbits, slimes, zombies... sometimes even Demon Eyes, appearing even inside my house and parts of the mine that's underneath my house (they are connected... KINDA like one big giant basement).

I have it where the Guide is safe (why not? safe haven for him since he helps with what I can craft with what) but runs when one of the above go after him. Basically they'll just spawn anywhere offscreen... sad though it is. :/

It sounds bad :/ I'm digging a huge mine too, but it will be a hard work to demolish "natural" background and replace it with walls...

Another problem maybe you can solve: I can't find a way to biuld a house good for my guide.
