Personally, i haven't played in a server (for now). Though i'm kinda curious about how it work with mods (whether it's from the workshop or from Tmodloader). Because there are mods that give unfair advantages to player that are NOT intended by developers (like invincibility, infinite HP/MP, ...)
Granted, most of those cheating problems mostly affect competitive PvP and not much else, since Terraria isn't really a competitive game from the start (unlike CS:GO). it's a game about doing an adventure with your own style. So you won't get "banned" from changing how you play with mods (by definition, mods is a method of "cheating", but often players think more of them as variant of Terraria, even when they know the mod modifiy the game). However you might have a different experience from normal players. You might want to consider if you really need each specific mods, if you think it's fine for the overall gameplay (like Veinminer), or if you think it's too much of an advantage (exemple: abusing an all-item world from the steam workshop).
