Te portable cement mixer only increases wall placement speed.
You're going to want to find yourself a brick layer accessory. It is also sold occasionally by the Traveling Merchant. Some other useful items would be the toolbelt and extendo grip so as to increase your placement range. Though I've never used one, I also see on the wiki that the toolbox increases placement range.
The extendo grip can be found occasionaly sold by the traveling merchant also, and the toolbelt is sold by the goblin tinkerer.
One last thing, if you are building a horizontal row of blocks it may be useful to toggle the auto placement on. For me i think the button is cntrl. It will automatically aim your pick/blocks. ( It's also really useful for mining! )
