hardmode dungeon spawns
i was reading the wiki and I noticed it says that in the hardmode dungeon, the types of enemies that spawn depend on the background wall types.

like, there are dungeon bricks walls, dungeon slab walls and dungeon tiled walls.

it says the paladin only spawns in the dungeon BRICK walls. so...

could I theoretically go in with a hammer, remove all the dungeon tiles and slabs and replace them all with brick walls and get more paladins to spawn?

or does it not work that way?

it also says it depends on the types of banners you see and changing the banners does not change the enemies.

That doesn't work because it only works with natural walls.

"natural walls"? do you mean the ones that were placed there originally on world creation?

so, what if I expanded the size of the dungeon by removing the outer blocks and then rebuilding them outward and adding more walls..

would that also fail because the new walls I placed are not the originals?

I remember having bad luck with that. On my first playthrough there was a piece of equipment from an enemy I wanted, and so I spent a while looking for the correct wall that they'd appear in. The wall in question only appeared ONCE in the entire dungeon, and it was one of those tiny closets.

Natural walls are there when the world is created, walls placed by the player cause mobs not to spawn. you can't place natural walls without the help TEdit3.

If you know how spawning mechanics work in Terraria, you would know that placing walls prevents spawning any mobs...sooo, I would guess that it wouldn't work just because those are "player placed" walls.

I'm 99,99% sure that doesn't work, like people said before, the walls have to be natural, otherwise, if you happen to use those blocks for your house, enemies would spawn inside it.

that's right, I hadn't considered that.
I knew that, i just didn't think of it.

I admit, I don't fully understand how the spawning mechanics work.
I know all enemies spawn off screen.
I know the blocks have to do with what enemies spawn.

what is unclear to me.
are the enemies based on the blocks you are standing on or the blocks off screen?

it does appear as some enemies are based on the walls instead of the blocks, like the spiders in the spider biomes.
if you remove the spider biome walls with a hammer, the spiders stop spawning.

I know I have had many "failed" mob farms.
I try to build it like I see online but when I smooth out the surface terrain, there always seems to be little gaps and cracks and caves just below the surface that the game places naturally and eventually those fill up with enemies and they stop spawning where I am and i'll be sitting there with a battle potion and a water candle waiting for ♥♥♥♥ to spawn and nothing spawns.

I'll try digging down to all the little gaps and filling them in with blocks and then i have to crawl back out filling it back in as i go along, and then some other gap somewhere else fill in with enemies and it's very frustrating.

as for the dungeon, theres only 2 items left I haven't gotten, the paladin's hammer. and the shadowbeam staff.
I got 2 paladin shields, 3 rifle scopes, tactical shotgun, tabi, black belt and everything else.

the wiki says that paladins and the shadowbeam guys spawn on the dungeon brick walls.

I dunno if that means I need to stand in front of the correct wall or if the correct wall needs to be just off screen.

I spent like 8 hours in there, completely hollowing out the whole interior and then i replaced the dungeon blocks (not the walls) in strips so I can just go back and forth killing mobs.

I admit I still don't understand how to manipulate the spawns.

I seen a video by yrimir playing as a summoner and one night he farms a blood moon for fun, and the next morning he goes into the little trap he made and picks up 4 bananarangs, I've never gotten a bananarang, I get clowns to spawn but they don't spawn enough.
