I just recently tried expert mode and really struggled with Skeletron. I found it easier to do the wall of flesh, thus unlocking the new ore and building a full set of armor/weapons to defeat him.
The second time I fought him in expert I did the same thing and in the process of grinding for the gear I got the Daedalus bow and that made defeating him really easy.
-Sunflower
-Heart Lanter
-Campfire

-Two small rooms, one for the nurse and one for the dryad. The nurse can heal you mid-combat and the dryad can offer you a buff during the fight.
Did you put bonfires?
what class do you use?
To fight with bosses that cost me a class change, although I am a summoner, but for esqueletron I use ranger with minishark
You can also put the nurse with a bed, which if you move away and use the mirror to return to the bed spawn you heal with the nurse and return to the battle
For other gear, I'd recommend the Spectre Boots at bare minimum, if not Lightning Boots. Any variant of Thing in a (Horseshoe) Balloon is very useful too. I've never really used the Frog Leg crafting tree, but I know a lot of people swear by it as an alternative. Band of Regen is obvious. The Worm Scarf and Brain of Confusion are both great options. And if you're still having trouble surviving, reforge every accessory to Warding. Defense is king.
Oh, and potions of course. Regen and Ironskin at a minimum, plus some level of Well Fed. Endurance would be handy too since that's easy to get. Depending on which world evil you have, you can go with Wrath or Rage too.
Meteor Armor + Space Gun with magic power potion and sharktooth necklace were pretty much what I had for offense. No bonfire, no heart lantern, no nothing else just the minecart track and shooting him in the face with the space gun for like 2 minutes.
I'm going to have to look up the minecart trick.
Hes easy with later gear of course.
I managed to beat him, mainly by making a proper arena with heart lanterns, campfires, and the nurse so I could just heal up anytime my hp was really low, I suppose that was the biggest difference.
Used the yoyo trick to sit behind some blocks and hit him after you knock his four arms down. Hes super easy at that point.
I ended up having to go back to normal mode because I must have died 300 times trying to digout the V of corruption/crimson and hollow after beating the wall of flesh.
