what class are you playing on? cause me playing melee i was able to get through mastermode prehardmode. and those bosses like brain and skeletron weren't hard.
Wait til you get to the mech bosses.

I just recently tried expert mode and really struggled with Skeletron. I found it easier to do the wall of flesh, thus unlocking the new ore and building a full set of armor/weapons to defeat him.

The second time I fought him in expert I did the same thing and in the process of grinding for the gear I got the Daedalus bow and that made defeating him really easy.
Not sure how you want to beat it. You want to beat it fighting normally or beat it by setting up a arena to out run the boss. Or beat it by playing abusing on game mechanics(people call cheesing it).

Yes, it is very hard for the first time. I play expert mode first, and i failed many times. Then I extend the place i build for fighting. So may be you can try that too.
i feel the skeletron is bigger than i thought before, and easy to be hurt

-Put 2 honey bucket pools to give you healing buff
-Sunflower
-Heart Lanter
-Campfire
-Any banner
-Two small rooms, one for the nurse and one for the dryad. The nurse can heal you mid-combat and the dryad can offer you a buff during the fight.

What class/weapons are you trying? If you've beaten the EoW/BoC, you can mine Hellstone. Molten armor is your best option defensively, and the Volcano can rip through Skeletron as long as you keep the proper distance. The Boomstick is a great ranged option, and the Minishark or a Molten bow lets you keep more distance. I can't really speak for mage weapons since I have little experience with them, but you can get Jungle armor by then.
Some beat it by using beehive. Strange choices. But it work.
The esqueletron is difficult no matter how many hours you have, did you make a big arena?
Did you put bonfires?
what class do you use?
To fight with bosses that cost me a class change, although I am a summoner, but for esqueletron I use ranger with minishark
You can also put the nurse with a bed, which if you move away and use the mirror to return to the bed spawn you heal with the nurse and return to the battle

Forgot a few other things. One option is the good ol' Meteor armor + Space Gun (or Zapinator) cheese. Just keep running away and spamming fire. If you have a bunch of fallen stars saved up, the Star Shooter is another (expensive) option. And whatever you're using, having a couple of minions never hurts.

For other gear, I'd recommend the Spectre Boots at bare minimum, if not Lightning Boots. Any variant of Thing in a (Horseshoe) Balloon is very useful too. I've never really used the Frog Leg crafting tree, but I know a lot of people swear by it as an alternative. Band of Regen is obvious. The Worm Scarf and Brain of Confusion are both great options. And if you're still having trouble surviving, reforge every accessory to Warding. Defense is king.

Oh, and potions of course. Regen and Ironskin at a minimum, plus some level of Well Fed. Endurance would be handy too since that's easy to get. Depending on which world evil you have, you can go with Wrath or Rage too.

i nver played the pc version begore, i got the mobile version but it was wayyyyy before 1.4.5 dropped on mobile, after this whole time i bought the pc version, tried the expert mode, and beat all pre-hardmode bosses as summoner (currently prep for Wall of Flesh). i think you need more potion (speed, regen, food, and def + night vision) and dodge the attacks

I was struggling with Master skeletron but after I tried the circular minecart track I beat it 1st try.

Meteor Armor + Space Gun with magic power potion and sharktooth necklace were pretty much what I had for offense. No bonfire, no heart lantern, no nothing else just the minecart track and shooting him in the face with the space gun for like 2 minutes.
Skeletron is quite the movement boss, I beat for the worthy seed with my brother like a year ago, also working on calamity infernum. but every single time i've beaten him i always use spectre boots. For the first attack i Use an molten bow or flamefury whatever it's called. when he swings his hand att you i'd recommend dropping down a platform (in your arena) to dodge his han. when his head starts spinning really just run away. when you've taken down his arms he should start shooting skulls, just use the rocket boots flight and jump over his head, when his skull starts spining start throwing beenades to deal some damage. and repeat that with desert fossil armor an some warding accesories and you should emerge victorius. or as alot of other replys mentioned you could combine space gun with space armor (Sorry for bad english, Hope this helped :D)

I'm going to have to look up the minecart trick.

Skeleton Prime was wooping my ass with the gear you have at that level, even with the item that allows you to dodge.

Hes easy with later gear of course.

I managed to beat him, mainly by making a proper arena with heart lanterns, campfires, and the nurse so I could just heal up anytime my hp was really low, I suppose that was the biggest difference.

Used the yoyo trick to sit behind some blocks and hit him after you knock his four arms down. Hes super easy at that point.

I ended up having to go back to normal mode because I must have died 300 times trying to digout the V of corruption/crimson and hollow after beating the wall of flesh.
