Terraria crashing on Macbook Pro
So I've been trying to play Terraria on my recently gifted Macbook Pro, as I've played it before on both console and mobile throughout my life. But it keeps crashing about every 10-20 minutes of gameplay and doesn't save my data properly. Does anyone know how to prevent this from happening, and what settings to adjust for my computer and the game itself??

I recently got a macbook Pro too. I will tell you that macbooks are NOT made for games at all. So don't expect the best from it in that way. If you have a different computer, that is probably the best way to go for running games. You can try to optimize your mac as best you can though.

-Make sure to go input "/gldevice:Vulkan" in the launch options for the game.(Steam library->right click Terraria->go to properties->launch options) This helps with performance/lag.

-Also, try not to keep apps actively running/doing something in the background. For me, obs looked like it was lowering my performance, but that one is only if you plan on recording.

-I heard that there is a game mode on macbooks, but that it automatically turns on after a certain version of mac when you go fullscreen in games. This would optimize it for Terraria.

-Use frame skip in game (subtle frame skip option) which skips frames to keep performance.

-Finally, if it comes down to it, you could turn down graphics settings in terraria to improve performance.

Thats pretty much everything I have gathered so far. I have been having problems too, so I hope this helps you as much as it helped me.

It is entirely possible that he has a different macbook pro than me and it's just worse. I think this is worth trying just incase though.

I have just the normal MacBook Pro according to when I check it's details, but yeah I wish it could run games better and not suck ass half the time lol. I'll give these tips a try though, so thank you for the help!

Alright update: it did unfortunately crash after a bit of me playing yet again :((. It seems like the only way i can play for now is having to save and exit the world every few minutes because autosave doesn't always trigger. Not too sure why this is even happening, but I may as well conclude that my MacBook is stubborn :p

Theres not a "normal" macbook pro, I just meant basically different macbook pros with different chips. If you go to the apple at top left of your screen, then about this macbook. That will tell you which one you have. theres m1, m2, and m3 so far. (m3 being the best/latest chip)

Sorry this didn't help with the crashing. Maybe try updating your macbook? Or maybe a simple restart.

I will try playing for a bit too to see if I encounter this crashing issue your having. Having to leave every 10 minutes sounds unplayable to me.
(edit): I did not have this problem after playing for 25 minutes straight.

If you didn't have an issue maybe you're running an intel mac while they have a M-series mac

Ah, my bad lol. I'm not the greatest at reading specifics on computers. Though it seems my MacBook has an Apple M3 Pro chip. I'll continue to keep just trying different things to see if it runs better :p
