-Make sure to go input "/gldevice:Vulkan" in the launch options for the game.(Steam library->right click Terraria->go to properties->launch options) This helps with performance/lag.
-Also, try not to keep apps actively running/doing something in the background. For me, obs looked like it was lowering my performance, but that one is only if you plan on recording.
-I heard that there is a game mode on macbooks, but that it automatically turns on after a certain version of mac when you go fullscreen in games. This would optimize it for Terraria.
-Use frame skip in game (subtle frame skip option) which skips frames to keep performance.
-Finally, if it comes down to it, you could turn down graphics settings in terraria to improve performance.
Thats pretty much everything I have gathered so far. I have been having problems too, so I hope this helps you as much as it helped me.
Sorry this didn't help with the crashing. Maybe try updating your macbook? Or maybe a simple restart.
I will try playing for a bit too to see if I encounter this crashing issue your having. Having to leave every 10 minutes sounds unplayable to me.
(edit): I did not have this problem after playing for 25 minutes straight.
