Look at terraria like games that are very popular like Core Keeper ...
Core Keeper is not a "terraria-like" game, it's completely different in almost every single way. The only things those games have in common are surface level mechanics. Frankly, there is no "terraria-like" game out now that deserves to be called that. The closes we've ever gotten was Starbound, and that was ages ago, and it still wasn't good enough to be considered a legitimate competitor.
Anyway, the reason there won't be a "Terraria 2" is because the original game is too good and iconic, and they have poured in way too much effort into it. As a result, any sequel they make would be a disappointment. They will NEVER be able to capture the lightning in the bottle again, and they would have to compete with over a decade worth of content updates and mod development. It's literally impossible for them to make a sequel that would be worthy of it's name at this point, and they know it very well. This is why they aren't working on a sequel but just updating this game. Even Terraria Otherworld wasn't a sequel, it was supposed to be a very different experience. Even back then they knew a sequel wasn't going to work.
Also there's the fact they spent over a dozen years of their lives working on a single game from a single genre. Wouldn't you think they'd want to make something else for a change?
look at minecraft being a terraria like game
1. This may not come as a surprise to you, but gamer psychology works like a circle of life. Gamers play shooters, then they get bored and play new shooters that look almost identical... I'm the same way with Terraria. This game started to bore me, I wanted something new, but as you said
Terraria 2 doesn't really make much sense because it would be the same thing, but in a different format, e.g. with different graphics. On the other hand Re Logic can always try to expand this universe like Mojang did with Minecraft (and no, I don't mean the live action version hh) - Minecraft 2 will never happen, but we got some spin off games like Dungeons or Legends. Maybe a Terraria spin off as a new genre would make sense.
2. Games like Core Keeper, Necesse, Forager etc will always be comparable to Terraria and Minecraft because these two games are the biggest. When people think voxel sandbox they see Minecraft, when they think pixel art survival they see Terraria.
3. Check out the game "Planet Centauri", it is similar to Terraria and Starbound but also gives a lot of new things and content. I would say that this game is the closest to the Terraria's throne!
Sorry for my English, It's not my native language.
after that remake the game in a newer better engine. preferably have crossplay from the start.
No problem. Regarding Planet Centauri, I know about the game. It's not very good sadly. It's a bundle of mechanics loosely tied together but not forming any coherent whole. The production values are also sorely lacking. For how long that game was in Early Access the final result is quite pathetic.
