Do items in chests count for NPC requirements?
So, I got Terraria recently, and i've been loving every part of it! (except the Corruption that spawed right beside my base)

I want to get all the NPCs as soon as possible, but some of them require me to have certain items in my inventory. I already have a lot of random stuff that probably counts placed directly below my town, so the only thing to do would be building the houses.

1. The item has to be in your inventory for npc's who have a specific requirements to move in, if it's in a chest it will not register.

2. Pre hardmode corruption can only spread via grass and thorny bushes, therefore you can block corruption spread by: building a small 2x6 or so high tower of non corruptible blocks (wood works), ensuring that the grass on both sides are separated, and thorny bushes cannot grow over them. A short row of sunflowers also works as the tiles underneath them cannot be converted - sunflowers decrease the evil biome tile count by 80 so if you ever find one of your housing spaces to be 'corrupted', if you place enough of them, it will become viable again.

3. Some of the basic item requirements for important npc's are:

50 silver for the merchant,

An explosive (such as bombs or dynamite) kept in your inventory for the demolitionist. The merchant must also be present,

The arms dealer requires you to have bullets or a gun that shoots bullets in your inventory: the easiest one to obtain is the undertaker from corruption orbs as it is guaranteed on the first one you break, you can use explosives to break ebonstone in order to reach it, destroying the orb using either bombs, or a hammer,

Dryad after defeating the eye of cthulhu, eater of worlds or skeletron - buy pumpkin seeds to craft pumpkin pies (it's a medium food buff that provides +3 defense, +3% critical hit chance, +7.5% melee speed, +7.5% damage, +0.75 minion knockback, +30% movement speed, and +10% mining speed), iirc when she's happy you can make around 50-70 of them for 1 gold - you should also buy sunflowers and place them in your arenas because they decrease spawn rates and increase your movement speed - planter boxes are useful as they can be used to plant any herb seeds you find. If you have a lot of money, you can substitute them over platforms when making arenas as they only place horizontally (so you won't accidentally create stairs) they are lavaproof, and sand cannot land on them in case you want to use the sand gun.

And just a random tip, make sure you have 'smart block placement: to cursor' enabled in cursor settings. I don't know why this isn't a default feature

I would also recommend having your inventory set to C and healing to V - you use both of these functions constantly during your plathrough, they should be easily accessible and your thumb isn't doing anything other than jumping
