Fishing in Lava?
Title explains it all I guess. Can you fish in lava or not?
I got a quest to find some kind of Wall-of-Flesh-Fish, which I suppose can only be found in hell, but since there is no water there, I tried fishing in lava. The fishing animation works just as normal, but so far nothing bites.
Maybe with a better pole? I use the turkey-pole or whatever it is, that the travelling merchant sells.

Okay, thanks. Where can I get that one, though?
Getting better Poles is currently rather hard, I think. Too bad you cant craft more than 4. All the others seem to be pretty rare.

That's very generous of you, but I'd rather get it on my own. Thank you anyway.
It's weirdly recursive that I have to complete questes to get the item I need to complete these quests.

what bait would you need to fish in lava?

For fishing in lava you need the best available poles, which is hotline and gold, both from angler quests. For poles better than the crappy stock ones you can craft, the mechanic sells one, though i've never figured out how to make her sell it, the traveling merchant sometimes sells the 3rd best rod, which has 40% power.

Mechanic sells the pole if she's in a house in an ocean biome.

Not always I think. I tried that, putting her in an ocean house. I saw it in her inventory, but when I went to get some coins and returned, it was gone. Maybe the moon phase play a role in this ...?
Also, fishing in honey works, too. I just tried it :)

Mechanical sells the pole based on moon phase not biome.

This seems to be correct. She sold me the pole and my town's at the center of the map, not near any oceans.

Don't know which moon phase is required, though. I always get them mixed up anyway.

Edited because memory:

The French trick is to say that the moon is a liar; it makes a "D" shape when it's Croissante (waxing) and it makes a "C" shape when it's Décroissante (waning).

I think Terraria's moon follows the same rules... but I'm not certain.

And unless I'm wrong this would all be inverted *again* in the southern hemisphere.

there seems to be some confusion on the whole mechanics fishing rod... you can buy it on days with a waxing or wayning cresent
