Basically, just look for ice chests. If they attack you when you get close, they are mimics.
The easiest way is to search for them is to drink a hunter potion and see which chests glow. Another method is to mine out all ice chests you can find, then keep searching through the chest-free area over and over again. If you see a chest where there wasn't one before, it's a mimic.
the "ice blade" is the weaker, normal-mode counterpart of the frostbrand. it can sometimes be found in ice-chests in the underground snowbiome.
well, first, you should dig a hellevator. a hellevator (hell+elevator) is a 2 or preferably 3 tile-wide tunnel straight down to the bottom of the world. you need some buckets to remove water, that's in your way and later you can pour it over lava, which is blocking your path to turn them into obsidian block, that can be mined. use the stone/dirt blocks from the digging, to close your hellevator walls, if you dig into a natural cavern.
once you've finished, whenever you want to visit the underworld, you just need to jump down and enjoy your "flight".
now, that you are in hell, go exploring. you should have a shadow key, if you did the dungeon - take it with you, there are many locked shadow chests down there in pre-build houses.
the enemies here are almost as strong as the jungle mobs, so be careful. also, a waterwalkingpotion/obsidianskin potion is advised, since the floor is mostly lava. you also can just build bridges over them (which may help you against WoF).
you sometimes see a dmon, casting sickles at you, some of them are holding a "guide voodoo doll", make sure to catch it, if you defeat one of those voodoo demons, or the item may fall into the lava.
if that happens, your guide dies and WoF will be summoned. if you're catching those, you can throw them into the lava later and summon it, if you're well prepared.
also, mine every hellstone you can reach, but watch for the lava. also, the blocks can hurt you, so if you mined obsidian before, make a skull out of them. (it grants immunity to fire blocks - you still get hurt from lava, though!)
you can craft 1 obsidian block and 3 hellstone blocks into 1 hellstone bar, to craft (given enough hellstone bars) the best normal-mode pickaxe and the molten armor, which gives the highest defense pre-hardmode and better melee stats.
tl;dr
i've just wasted both our time, you should go read the wiki. :P
if you're too lazy or just don't have enough time, craft "water walking potions" - they have the same effect, for a few minutes only.
regardless of which method you prefer, make "obsidian skin potions" to make you immune to lava for a few minutes, while exploring/mining/building stuff at the underworld.
if you have one of these (potion or lava waders), all you need to do is dig trough houses, which may block your path when fighting WoF, since you are lava-jesus.
no bridge required that way.
for an even more easy WoF-ownage: get a phoenix blaster (with silver bullets as ammo) crafted with a handgun, found in normal, brown chests + 10 hellstone bars then make a nights edge, crafted at a demon/crimson altar with muramasa from dungeon chest+lights bane OR blood butcherer from demonite OR crimsonite bars+blade of grass from junglespores/stingers and a fiery greatsword made out of hellstone bars and equip either "necro armor", made out of bones+cobweb for range damage or molten armor for defense.
aim at the eye/s with the phoenixblaster and kill "the hungry" (it's tentacle thingys) with your sword, if they're too close.
do you have a blizzard/sandstorm in a bottle/balloon? no? get one. it's almost like you can fly with one of these making traveling in hell really easy.
