How does multiplayer work?
I'm considering Terraria, but I have a couple of questions about multiplayer. Some family members and I enjoy playing Minecraft on PC, on a private server that we host. In the case of Minecraft, any multiplayer has to take place on a private server; Mojang doesn't actually host any games. Or, there is a single player mode. Different platforms are not compatible. In order to play with my brother, using the PC client, I have to play on the PC, not my XBox.

How does Terraria compare with this? I see that it is possible to host a private server, but are there public ones as well? If my brother has the PC client, and I have the XBox client, can we still play together on the same server?

Thank you for your help!

It is impossiable to connect two differently coded object.
id say it would be like yu trying to connect to a minecraft 1.7 server while you have only 1.4

different objects, thats also the reason why you cannot connect older versions to newer ones.

There are no "official" servers; there are some that are considered "public" since they are open to anyone, but they are hosted by private individuals. And no, it is not possible to connect the PC version with the console version. Only PC can connect to PC, Xbox can connect to Xbox, PS3 can connect to PS3, etc..

Basically, the same as Minecraft.

Take it like this your brother will be considered "bad data" because he has weapons unknown to the pc version of terraria and he will be promptly kicked off the game.

That's not true as of 1.2. You have to have port-forwarding enabled on your router, but as long as it's enabled the game will automatically port-forward for you when you start a server.

That link just downloads the regular server software, which already comes with the game. If you installed the game through Steam then you have no reason to download it again unless yours isn't working.
