height doesnt matter, material doesnt matter
but you should know that you will have to rebuild the bridge everytime a meteorite will land on it

Yeah this is always a problem. I would say don't build a sky bridge untill you have all the meteorite you need then left them fall until they hit their max. There is a limit to how much you meteorite you can hve in the world. Once you hit that limit, the sky bridge shouldn't be a problem.

From the wiki: http://terraria.gamepedia.com/Meteorite_%28biome%29
---Once the conditions are met, multiple Meteorites will land in a World over time. However none will fall if there are already a certain number of Meteorite blocks above 0 depth. The limits are:

Small worlds: 400
Medium worlds: 600
Large worlds: 800

IF you dont want your bridge to break, build it out of dungeon bricks, they are indestructable, except to your pickaxe/drill

Yeah, Mr. Titan here asks a lot of pretty silly questions. He's probably a very young player... or something.

I was wondering about this; can you make a secondary skybridge, high above the first one, that's just a line of dirt for catching meteorites? Then one lands, you just patch the hole and you're good, and it stops it from hitting your actual skybridge.

I like the idea of making it out of Lihzahrd blocks though. If the meteor can't break those, just put a line of them along the top of the world and never worry again.

but dont forget star will fall on the upper skybridge, not the lower one or the normal world

Well it could perhaps be because as he/she stated being new and all and not familiar with the game so much, he/she was simply seeking advice from those who have played it for awhile to see if perhaps it would be better if it was built a certain way or with a certain material so it could work. ^_^

Does that still happen if the upper bridge is high enough? And does anyone actually need those by endgame anyway?

stars are never a bad thing, pre-hardmode the give maximum mana, at hardmode they make mana potions and serve as ammo for the star cannon

Exactly. I know there is a wiki which I have used plenty of times but I often find that better explanation comes from actual people.
